Reflections on something new 💜

Earlier this year, we launched the Cairngorms 2030 Communities Fund panel – recruiting a group of people who live in and love the National Park to design a £1 million fund for the communities, nature and climate of the Cairngorms.

We’re currently putting the panel’s thoughts into action, with the fund launching very soon, so we’re reflecting on what this process has been like and what we’ve learned. Read more here through the link in our comments ⬇️

Cairngorms 2030 is made possible by The National Lottery Heritage Fund Scotland, with thanks to National Lottery players.

What does it take to train a horse for Lonach? 🐎

For over 100 years, a horse and cart have followed the Lonach Highlanders through Strathdon at the Lonach Highland Gathering & Games.

In a tradition passed down from father to son, Derek Gray is the owner of the Lonach horse. Following the very sad passing of Socks, this year Derek has been training up a new horse – Monty. We caught up with him to find out what it takes to make a horse Lonach ready.

We’ll be at the Lonach Gathering on Saturday 22 August– stop by for a blether if you see us! 👋

We've all been very concerned about the wildfire’s impact on nature in Glenmore and Abernethy.

Last week we spoke to Sarah, Head of Conservation, who has been out on the ground as a spotter for our thermal drone team, and has seen first-hand how the wildfire has impacted the landscape.

While firefighting operations have now ceased in Glenmore and Abernethy, partner teams and volunteers on the ground continue to deal with hotspots and there are still areas with fallen trees and unstable ground. Please follow all on site signage and guidance from rangers, and do not attempt to access the affected areas.

The Cultural Heritage Fund is back! 🧵

The fund supported 11 projects earlier this year all about the identity and cultural heritage of the National Park – from the creation of digital archives in Braemar and Glenmore to a project building traditional boats in Kingussie.

Do you have a heritage project that could benefit from this fund? Express your interest by Thursday 3 September at the link in our comments ⬇️
