Some places are more than just somewhere you walk — they become part of your family’s story. 💚
For National Walking Month, and as part of the WeRoam National Walking Month Challenge, we wanted to share one of Kieran’s favourite places: Whinless Downs and Long Wood, managed by the White Cliffs Countryside Project.
"This place is incredibly special to me and my family. My grandad played here during WWII before later bringing my dad and his siblings here as children. Then my dad brought me and my brother here countless times growing up and now I get to bring my daughter here too."
Seeing my daughter sitting proudly at the top of these steps made me smile… although the photo definitely doesn’t show just how steep they really are. I can confirm I was far too out of breath by the time I stopped to take the picture 😅
In front of her is Elms Vale Recreation Ground, with Dover Castle standing proudly on the horizon and Dover Port just to the right. On a really clear day, you can even see France from here.
This place holds generations of memories for us. Whenever I need to clear my head, reset, or simply get some fresh air, this is usually where you’ll find me.
There’s something incredibly special about walking the same paths that generations of your family have walked before you.
