Some places are more than just somewhere you walk — they become part of your family’s story. 💚

For National Walking Month, and as part of the WeRoam National Walking Month Challenge, we wanted to share one of Kieran’s favourite places: Whinless Downs and Long Wood, managed by the White Cliffs Countryside Project.

"This place is incredibly special to me and my family. My grandad played here during WWII before later bringing my dad and his siblings here as children. Then my dad brought me and my brother here countless times growing up and now I get to bring my daughter here too."

Seeing my daughter sitting proudly at the top of these steps made me smile… although the photo definitely doesn’t show just how steep they really are. I can confirm I was far too out of breath by the time I stopped to take the picture 😅

In front of her is Elms Vale Recreation Ground, with Dover Castle standing proudly on the horizon and Dover Port just to the right. On a really clear day, you can even see France from here.

This place holds generations of memories for us. Whenever I need to clear my head, reset, or simply get some fresh air, this is usually where you’ll find me.

There’s something incredibly special about walking the same paths that generations of your family have walked before you.

Happy Friday everyone ☀️💚

"One of the main reasons I prefer walking laps at Woodlands Park is because it feels much safer to do alongside my son. I don’t have to constantly worry about busy roads or traffic, which makes the walk far more relaxing and enjoyable for us both" Sarah Gravesend Nutrition

"What I love most is that it often inspires other parents to get involved too, making it a really great activity for families to enjoy together."

🌊 Happy Friday from Steve and Cathy from Gravesend Lifestyle Lab

Walking the Thames Path in Gravesend is where river, wellbeing & history meet 🌊

There’s something grounding about following the edge of the River Thames especially when your walk leads you to Gravesend Town Pier.

👣 The world’s oldest surviving cast iron pier, first opened in 1834
🚢 Once a vital gateway where passengers arrived, departed, and stepped into new lives
🌍 A place shaped by movement, stories, and connection

Walking here, you feel both the calm of the water and the weight of history beneath your feet.

💭 The river slows your thoughts
🌿 The open space gives you room to breathe
📖 And places like the pier remind you just how many lives have passed this way before you

That’s the beauty of a Thames Path walk in Gravesend it’s not just good for your wellbeing, it connects you to something bigger.

👣 Same river. Centuries of stories. One peaceful path.

Where do you love to walk? 👇

✈️👑 Stories of service — from sky to crown 👑✈️

Exploring Gravesend with Cathy and Steve from Gravesend Lifestyle Lab WeRoam reveals history in the most unexpected places from wartime heroes to royal legacies.

One powerful story is that of Mohinder Singh Pujji.

🌍 An Indian-born pilot who served with the Royal Air Force in WWII
🎖️ Flew multiple combat missions despite injury and adversity
🤝 Represents the global effort behind Britain’s wartime resilience

And just a short walk away, you’ll find tributes to Elizabeth II a figure whose life was defined by duty and decades of service.

👑 Gravesend is home to statues honouring the late Queen, marking her Platinum Jubilee and lifelong connection to the nation
🌿 These landmarks offer a moment to reflect on continuity from wartime sacrifice to modern monarchy

It’s this contrast that makes walking here so powerful, different lives, different eras, but all tied together by service.

👣 Every step tells a story.

✨ Following the footsteps of history… and wondering what stories we don’t hear ✨

After our WeRoam with Steve and Cathy
Gravesend Lifestyle Lab through Gravesend, we’ve been thinking a lot about the story of Pocahontas and how much of it is often simplified.

We hear the name. We see the statue. But her real story is far more complex.

🌿 She was a young woman navigating two completely different worlds
🌿 Her journey to England wasn’t just exploration it was shaped by politics and colonial power
🌿 Even today, her legacy is interpreted in many different ways

Standing by the Pocahontas Statue, it felt less like a history lesson… and more like a moment to reflect.

That’s what we love about walking with Steve and Cathy and WeRoam it’s not just about where you go, but how you think when you get there.

👣 Same streets. Deeper perspective. Check back in tomorrow for the next Gravesend place to visit ❤️

🌿 Wandering with Steve and Cathy from Gravesend Lifestyle Lab and WeRoam in Gravesend 🌿

There’s something special about slowing down and seeing a place on foot. Our latest walk with WeRoam took us through the historic streets of Gravesend where every corner has a story to tell.

One of the most powerful stops? The Pocahontas Statue.

✨ A few facts that stayed with me:
• Pocahontas (also known as Matoaka) was a Native American woman from the Powhatan tribe
• She travelled to England in 1616 and was presented to society as “Lady Rebecca”
• She died in Gravesend in 1617, aged around 21
• The statue marks the place near where she is buried at St George’s Church
• It was gifted by the USA in 1958 as a symbol of peace and history between nations

Walking tours like this remind us why I love exploring locally. You don’t need to travel far to discover stories that matter.

Check back tomorow to find out more about there walk.
