Roseberry Topping is a distinctive and iconic landmark with fine views across North Yorkshire and Cleveland. At just 1,049 feet (320 m) high, Roseberry Topping may not be the biggest hill you'll ever see, but it will certainly be one of the most distinctive. Its shape, caused by the combination of a geological fault and a mining collapse in 1912 has made the hill the most beloved landmark in the T

ees Valley area. With its half-cone summit and jagged cliff, some say it reminds them of the Matterhorn in Switzerland. While many visitors come to conquer the hill, there's plenty more to do besides with a fantastic array of habitats to discover. Explore bluebell woods, heather moorland, the open expanses of Roseberry Common and a long abandoned quarry. Don't miss:

• Amazing panoramic views from the summit of the hill.
• Spot fantastic wildlife in the woods.
• Take a walk to Newton Moor to enjoy swathes of purple heather in the summer and admire Roseberry Topping from a distance.
• Uncover Roseberry's industrial past and explore its geology in Cliff Rigg Quarry.
• Visit in spring for the best displays of bluebells for miles around. Here we will keep you posted with the latest news from Roseberry Topping, give you a sneak peak at some of the work that we get up to and provide you with an updated list of events not to be missed. Your feedback is very valuable to us - here you can share your opinions, your likes and dislikes, what you especially love about Roseberry Topping and what you think we could change to make you love this place even more. Why not share your news and photographs with us too?

We’re delighted to share that the initial works to improve the footpath through Cliff Ridge Wood at Roseberry Topping are now complete. 😊👣

If you’re out walking over the Christmas holidays, you’ll see that the surface has been considerably improved and there is now much better drainage, which was needed in these wetter months.

Going into the new year, you may see our contractors and staff working on the path from time-to-time. As the new path settles and dries out it will require tweaks, and our teams will ensure these are made to keep this path accessible for as many people as possible long into the future.

Over the past few weeks, there’s been good progress made on the work to repair the footpath running through Cliff Ridge Wood at Roseberry Topping. ⛰️🚶👣

The snow and then heavy rainfall have made the conditions challenging for the team carrying out the work, however they are now over halfway through the length of the path. It’s still a work in progress, but these images include some early before and after photos.

If you are venturing out along this path, please continue to take extra care due to the wet and slippery surfaces. The purpose of the work is to improve the surface, including adding better and more effective drainage, which will give walkers a much better experience in the future.

We’ll be sharing more about the work on the path over the coming weeks and you can read more about our wider project work of repairing the footpaths of Roseberry Topping here 👉 https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/yorkshire/roseberry-topping/improving-paths-at-roseberry-topping

This week work has started to repair the footpath running through Cliff Ridge Wood at Roseberry Topping.

The main purpose of the work to this path is to improve the surface and add better drainage, which has been an ongoing issue through the wood for several years.

The path is the closest to Great Ayton railway station to the south of Roseberry Topping. We don’t anticipate any need to close the path during the works, however if you’re out walking please take extra care, especially at night, as there may be uneven surfaces. There is clear signage to make visitors aware they’re approaching an area where work is being carried out.

If you’re visiting Roseberry Topping in the near future, the toilets at the main car park, managed by the North York Moors National Park, are currently closed. 😔

🚫 Toilet closure at Newton under Roseberry carpark🚫

We regret to inform visitors that both the male and female toilet facilities at Newton under Roseberry (Roseberry Topping) carpark are closed until further notice due to extensive vandalism discovered over the weekend.

The damage is significant, affecting the walls, plasterwork, electrics, entrance door and security systems of the male facilities. Unfortunately, the electrical damage has left the whole building unsafe, so both the male and female toilets are closed at this time. Contractors including electricians, joiners, and plasterers are required for the repairs.

This act of vandalism is deeply disappointing and represents a serious waste of public resources, with repairs likely to cost several thousand pounds. These are funds and staff time that should have been spent on improving and maintaining our carparks, facilities and Rights of Way network, not repairing deliberate destruction.

We are working as quickly as possible to coordinate the necessary repairs and will provide updates as soon as we have a clearer timeline. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Not far from us here at Roseberry Topping. Please be mindful if out in the countryside with your dogs.

Unfortunately, we've had a couple of instances recently of dogs off leads attacking sheep at Cod Beck/Scarthwood Moor, also known locally as Sheepwash. Several ewes were wounded in these attacks and, at this time of year, they'll be in lamb.

We want you and your dog(s) to have a stress-free day when you visit our places. We also want to protect farm animals and precious wildlife habitats, as well as ensure that everyone can enjoy the countryside, whether they’re visiting with a dog or not.

It's essential to use a short lead around sheep. In the countryside, this also helps to keep your dog(s) from disturbing ground-nesting birds and other farm animals.

We ask all visitors to the area to please act responsibly and have control of your dog at all times. If you pass through gates, please ensure you close them behind you.

We announced earlier this year that the National Trust, working in partnership with the North York Moors National Park, were about to undertake some essential restoration work on the footpaths on Roseberry Topping. The aim of the work is to ensure that this very special place remains a safe and welcoming location for people to experience the beauty of the North York Moors and reconnect with nature and the environment.

We’re delighted that work on the first path has recently been completed and the path now reopened. We’ve put together a short video on the work so far, which you can watch here https://youtu.be/35ItHQy09PI

We thank everyone for their patience this year and look forward to continuing the project in the new year, meaning Roseberry Topping remains accessible to as many people as possible for many years to come.
