Yesterday, Faye had the pleasure of delivering our Trauma-Informed Practice and Therapeutic Parenting training externally.

The session focuses on understanding how trauma can affect children’s behaviour and development, while helping those supporting them to respond with empathy, consistency and a therapeutic approach.

💙 Learning Disability Awareness Week 2026 💙

Throughout this week, we have shared some incredible stories about the amazing young people we support and the achievements they accomplish every day.
From overcoming personal challenges, embracing new experiences, building confidence, achieving goals and simply finding joy in everyday moments, each story has reminded us why we do what we do.

At GS Social Care, we are proud, passionate and inspired by the young people we support. They show us strength, resilience and determination every single day.

This year's message from Mencap is "Do You See Me?"
Our message back to the young people we support is simple:

We see your strengths, your personality, your achievements and your potential.
We see your abilities, not your disabilities.
We see the barriers that exist, and we will continue to challenge them.
We see your voices, your choices and your rights.
Most importantly, we will continue to stand beside you, advocate for you and fight for the opportunities, respect and inclusion that every person deserves.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our incredible staff team. Your compassion, dedication, patience and commitment make a real difference to the lives of the young people we support every single day. 💙 Learning Disability Awareness Week – Celebrating some amazing people💙
Yvonne and Janette would like to talk about the young lady they support in her own home-

"What can we say about this amazing young lady?

Janette has supported this young lady for nearly 14 years and Yvonne for around 7 years, and both agree she is one of the most inspiring people they have ever had the privilege of supporting.

When Janette first became her support worker, she didn't have the strength to lift her head from her pillow, and, coupled with her complex health needs, was fully dependent on her care team. Although she is non-verbal, she communicates through her facial expressions and body language – especially when she gives you "the look", ha ha!

Over time, she has gained much more movement and is now strong enough to sit in her lounge chair. Despite the strong daily medications she takes and the seizures that can leave her exhausted and sleeping for long periods while she recovers, she continues to show incredible strength and resilience. As Janette says, she is one of the strongest people she knows.

Yvonne has witnessed so many positive changes during the years she has supported her. When she first started working with this young lady, she spent much of her day in bed and only really left home for hospital appointments or occasional trips around the estate. Fast forward to today, and she enjoys regular trips out and about in her community. Whether it's a taxi ride into town for a look around the shops, people watching, visiting the community hub, spending time in the sensory room or hydrotherapy pool, changing her books at the library, or visiting the park or garden centre, it is wonderful to see her experiencing things that many of us take for granted.

Both Janette and Yvonne describe this young lady as gentle, patient and incredibly determined, with a smile that melts your heart. They speak about the lessons she teaches everyone around her about appreciating life and focusing on what really matters.

As Yvonne says, it is an absolute privilege to support this amazing young lady. She truly is one of the strongest and most inspiring people you could ever meet.

💙 Learning Disability Awareness Week – Celebrating our amazing young people 💙

Some of our staff team have shared some lovely celebrations and I would like to share mine. I want to celebrate an amazing young man in one of our homes and recognise just how far he has come.

He has faced challenges from the very beginning. His childhood was far from easy, and there were many times when he didn't have the safety, stability and support that every child deserves. Despite everything he has been through, he has always found a way to keep going.

One of the bravest things he ever did was ask for help, that took an incredible amount of courage and maturity, especially for someone so young.

Now an adult, he continues to amaze those around him. Recently, he had some huge health changes and understandably this has caused him a lot of anxiety, but he faced it head on. He has adapted so well and shown just how determined and resilient he is.

What we admire most about him is that he doesn't let his past define him. He has every reason to be angry at the world, but instead he is funny, caring, kind and always manages to make people smile. No matter what life throws at him, he keeps moving forward.

His journey is a reminder that our past does not have to determine our future. The strength, courage and determination he shows every day are truly inspiring, and we feel privileged to be part of his journey.

We are incredibly proud of everything he has achieved and the amazing young man he has become.

💙 Learning Disability Awareness Week – Celebrating a Remarkable Young People 💙

One of our support workers would like to celebrate a truly remarkable young man.

"For someone so young, he has experienced more trauma than many people will face in a lifetime. Despite this, he continues to show incredible resilience and strength, even during times of the year that can be particularly difficult for him.

Over the last few years, he has navigated huge changes in his life. He transitioned from home into a children's home and then into his own forever home. Along the way, he had to leave behind familiar staff, friends and routines that meant a great deal to him. He also moved on from college and the relationships he had built there. Each of these changes brought uncertainty, yet he faced them with courage and determination.

Since moving into his new home, he has continued to grow and flourish. When he first arrived, he had a very limited range of foods he would eat. Now, he is exploring new tastes and textures, showing a willingness to try things that once felt impossible.

Through learning opportunities and everyday experiences, he has developed new skills and can now confidently identify colours. He has also formed strong, trusting relationships with staff, which is a significant achievement and reflects how far he has come.

One of the things I admire most about him is his willingness to step outside of his comfort zone. Recently, we visited the Sea Life Centre at Trafford Centre. For many people, this might seem like a simple day out, but for him it involved facing a number of things that would usually cause anxiety, including busy environments, crowds, children, escalators and travelators. With preparation, reassurance and support, he embraced the experience and thoroughly enjoyed himself.

To others, these achievements may seem small, but for him they represent enormous progress. They are a reflection of his bravery, resilience and determination to keep moving forward.

This is only a small glimpse into the amazing things he has achieved, and there are many more successes still to come.

My message to him is simple: keep being amazing. We are all incredibly proud of you." 💙

💙 Learning Disability Awareness Week – Celebrating our remarkable young people 💙

One of our staff members in our children’s home would like to share a story about one of our young ladies.

“I am proud of our young lady for the determination and resilience she has shown in overcoming the challenges she has faced following surgery.

Despite having difficult days, she continues to work hard towards her goal of walking and remains focused on making progress. Along the way, she has developed positive ways of coping when things feel tough and has shown incredible strength in facing the challenges that come with her recovery.

She has grown in confidence, become better at communicating her feelings and needs, and continues to persevere even when progress is difficult. Her determination to keep going, even on the hard days, is inspiring to see.

It has been wonderful to watch her becoming her own person, growing in confidence and independence, and making such positive progress. Every achievement, no matter how big or small, is a reflection of the hard work and resilience she shows every day.

I am incredibly proud of how far she has come and everything she continues to achieve.”

💙 Learning Disability Awareness Week – Celebrating our amazing young people 💙
One of our support workers wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate one of the young adults she supports this Learning Disability Awareness Week.
“The young man makes me proud every time I work with him. He faces many challenges in his daily life, but despite this, he remains one of the kindest and most caring young people I have had the pleasure of supporting. He has a lovely nature, and his heart is always in the right place.
What stands out most to me is his resilience. There are times when he struggles and faces difficult moments, but once he has had the support and time he needs to regulate, he doesn't let those challenges define the rest of his day. He puts them behind him and carries on being the happy, smiley young man that we all know and love. He teaches us that every day is a fresh start. His ability to bounce back, find happiness and continue enjoying life despite the challenges he faces is something truly special.
We all feel very lucky to be part of his journey.
