The government has confirmed that there will be two unitary authorities for Surrey - West Surrey and East Surrey. Guildford is the County Town of Surrey and geographically central in West Surrey. Back our campaign to give the new West Surrey Unitary Council the centre it deserves in Surrey's iconic county town, and bring jobs, investment and growth to Guildford. The government has made its decision on Local Government Reorganisation in Surrey.

It has confirmed that Surrey will move to two new unitary councils from April 2027. These will be East Surrey and West Surrey.

We welcome the decision to simplify local government through the creation of two councils. As set out in our submission earlier this year, evidence pointed to this being the best outcome for Surrey. It will save money, simplify services and strengthen local communities.

Simplifying local government also ensures a strong foundation for devolution. We are committed to working with government and partners across Surrey, including new unitary authorities once in place, to establish a strategic authority for the area, which will be subject to the relevant approvals at government and local level.

Elections to the new shadow authorities will take place in May 2026. These newly elected councillors will oversee the transition to the new structure. The new councils will officially take responsibility in April 2027.

In the meantime, all 12 existing councils will continue to operate and deliver your services as usual.

Financial sustainability is one reason the government chose the two unitary option. To help ensure this, they have confirmed repayment in-principle of £500 million of Woking Borough Council’s debt in 2026-27.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to engage with the government consultation over the summer.

We’ll keep you updated as plans progress. In the meantime, you can find out more about what this means for Surrey on our website: https://orlo.uk/P1IHq

As usual, the Liberal Democrats are spreading baseless misinformation.

Surrey will have local elections to either the new unitary Councils (or to the county council if SCC is not abolished by the Government).

Of course, this Liberal MP knows this. He could have asked SCC to confirm if he wanted reassurance. But instead he chose to mislead residents by reposting something "he read in a newspaper " without checking for himself first! Very unprofessional. But as usual he will blame 'the tories", or blame Labour, or both. But the Liberals always do.

A government announcement on Local Government Reorganisation is now expected by the end of October (delayed from mid-October.) I will continue to keep residents keep informed of any ACTUAL news as and when it is known.

UPDATE
The Times/Sunday Times journalist has clarifed. But will Pinkerton and the Fib Dems publicise this? Will pigs fly!

TIMES:
"Elections for four new mayors would still go ahead next year. Surrey, which is in a unique arrangement on devolution, will also have elections in 2026.

But another leader of a DIFFERENT council said: “We are lobbying hard for elections to be delayed because we are confident we will get Reform mayors next year..."

Not a direct admission his reporting was wrong, but gone some way to clarify.

“Over the last three years, I have listened to what thousands of residents in Surrey tell me they want from their police service. They want our officers doing the job only they can - investigating and solving crime and taking offenders off our streets.

“The Chief Constable shares my commitment to a ‘back to basics’ approach to policing and I believe that is already starting to pay dividends for our communities.”

Surrey County Council has launched a new campaign to support residents with the Cost of Living increased costs by directing them to a variety of support and services to help them.

As part of this, ‘Your Essential Services’ directory is being delivered to all households in Surrey. This includes information on a wide range services that the county council provide, along with advice and support from local and national services.

Surrey County Council said: “We know that there are many people struggling with the cost of living, and as colder weather approaches that anxiety people feel is increased. The council is here to provide vital services that people rely on every day, and we want to make sure that everyone in Surrey knows how to access those services and what support is available to them. We hope residents find our directory useful, and can access the help they might need.”

The directory covers services such as the Surrey Crisis Fund who provide financial help to those that need it most, how to find out more about our Warm Welcome spaces this winter, as well as information on food banks and local charities.

We also have a variety of services available to all such as our Energy Advice Tool so you can easily find out if you are eligible for any schemes to make your house more energy efficient along with advice on things like debt relief grants and fuel vouchers.

Your Essential Services highlights support available in your local area including from your District or Borough, County Councillor and how your Community Link Officer can help.

To boost your income, you can find out how to learn a new skill, progress your career or take a course to help you and your household with the cost of living. This could be from one of the many Surrey Adult Learning courses, free numeracy classes from Multiply or some of the many opportunities available at your local library.

Look out for the Directory landing soon and keep it somewhere safe over the winter for when you need it. Or you can visit the SCC website more information". https://www.surreycc.gov.uk/health-and-welfare/support
