During our Policing Your Community roadshow this summer, one of the issues residents raised time and time again was the scourge of illegal e-scooters and e-bikes in our communities.

A brand-new crackdown has now been launched in Surrey called Operation Scramble which will see dedicated patrols take place in hot-spot areas.

Where officers find illegal e-bikes and e-scooters being used - they will use their powers to seize them and send them for destruction.

Lisa Townsend PCC was out last night for the first operation in and will be joining police teams in other parts of the county in the coming weeks.

She said: “Residents have told me loud and clear they have had enough and we have listened to those concerns. The result is this operation which aims to crackdown on illegal riding and take these often-dangerous machines off our streets for good.

“We know their use can often be linked to wider criminal activity and the message is clear – we want to make Surrey an illegal e-bike and e-scooter free county.”

A brand-new football project helping young people across Surrey has been launched thanks to funding secured by Lisa Townsend PCC
The Surrey FA ‘Stepover’ programme will work with young people aged 12-18 across Epsom and Ewell, Guildford, Reigate and Banstead, Tandridge and Woking, and is designed to help them build a brighter future.

The aim is to move them away from pathways that could lead to anti-social behaviour or violence and give them positive adult role models.

Over the coming months, the Commissioner is supporting a number of projects that use sport to make a difference to young people, helping to get them off their phones and develop their skills and confidence.

It was a real pleasure hosting the brilliant Surrey Search & Rescue team at our HQ for their annual meeting last week.

Their volunteers play a vital role assisting the emergency services in searching for vulnerable adults & children when they go missing in Surrey.

Deputy PCC Ellie Vesey-Thompson was on hand at the event to give out long service awards to members & hear about their recent achievements.

Last year the team, which is made up of over 80 volunteers and dogs, attended 50 call outs & spent over 6,000 hours on deployments in our county.

Lisa Townsend PCC joined the recent Operation Tramline in Surrey where officers use an unmarked HGV to target reckless drivers on the M25.

Nearly 300 motoring offences were identified during the week of action, including over 150 drivers caught using their mobile phone at the wheel.

Lisa chairs the Surrey Community Safety and Prevention Board in Surrey which is made up of partner agencies across the county who work together to make our communities feel safer for residents.

The results of Lisa Townsend PCC’s police force merger survey are in….

80% of Surrey residents who responded say they DO NOT want to see Surrey Police merged with neighbouring forces.

Lisa said: “It is crystal clear the overwhelming majority of Surrey residents who took part do not believe this merger plan is a good idea.

“I believe that the strength of feeling evident in the comments people have left send a clear message – hands off our local police force!
