Congratulations to Calvin Chan, a trainee surgeon, who is part of the winning duo at this year’s The Royal College of Surgeons of England surgical skills competition 🥳

The competition is designed to test competitors’ practical skills, foster teamwork, and to provide networking and collaboration opportunities.

Calvin said: “I’m very honoured to receive this award and I am very thankful for the surgical teaching and training I have had at Royal Surrey over the past couple of years.”
Well done Calvin!

"A lot of men live with incontinence and need somewhere to dispose of pads and other products discreetly. At the moment, many will use disabled toilets as an alternative, but that is not a sustainable solution," Leigh Woodard, Team Lead Pelvic Health Physiotherapist.

Did you know that 30% of men will experience urinary issues, and 10% with faecal incontinence? This figure can increase for those going through their cancer treatments.

Leigh is working on a project which would bring sanitary bins to male bathrooms at Royal Surrey so that men can manage their needs discreetly and with dignity.

As part of her project, she is asking patients and staff to complete a short, anonymous questionnaire about their opinions on whether sanitary bins should be provided in male toilets.

Meet Wendy Camfield, who has been volunteering for Royal Surrey Charity for the last three years

She wanted to give back to the hospital, as she, along with her husband, had received great care at Royal Surrey 🏥

Now retired, she volunteers for Royal Surrey Charity twice a week at table top sales, selling things such as knitwear, blankets and second-hand toys, games and puzzles. She said, “I was looking for rewarding charity work and a new challenge. We are so lucky to have this hospital and I just wanted to support it. It gives me pleasure, helping other people.”

“Everyone really cares about their patients and strives to give the absolute best nutritional care that they can. We work really well together,” Claire Froud, Macmillan Oesophago-Gastric Dietitian.

We’re giving a huge shout-out to our Dietitians

The team assesses and treats dietary and nutritional problems for our patients. This can include creating personalised diets for patients to support their recovery, working closely with speech and language therapists to make sure diets are modified where patients have swallow problems, and offering nutritional support for older adults struggling with weight loss or helping those who need to gain weight.

We have 45 dietitians covering a wide range of specialities including intensive care, paediatrics, gastroenterology, diabetes, general medicine, oncology and community outpatients.

Thank you to our Dietitians!

We’re saying a big thank you to our volunteers this Volunteers’ Week 🩵

Across our Trust, 320 registered volunteers give up their time to support our patients, colleagues and charity.

You will find them throughout our hospitals – welcoming visitors, supporting patients with dementia, helping our teams in areas including the Emergency Department, radiotherapy and outpatients, as well as raising essential charity funds.

Chrissie Beard, Voluntary Services Manager, said: “We are very lucky to have such a supportive team of volunteers across the Trust, helping in such a variety of roles, some front of house and some behind the scenes.

“It is a pleasure working with them and we are always keen to hear from our local community who may have a few hours a week to give on a regular basis.”

We’re incredibly grateful for every one of our volunteers 🩵

Better research means better care – and our clinicians are set for a boost to support their research 👨‍⚕️

Royal Surrey and Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals, which formed a Group model in 2025, will receive new funding to help clinicians pursue potentially life‑saving research alongside their clinical roles.

Our Group is now part of the South West London Regional Accounts for Clinical Researchers (RACR) pilot consortium, which will receive up to £350,000 a year over the next four years from the Medical Research Council (MRC) to support clinical research activity.

The funding will support clinicians at key stages in their research careers, helping them remain involved in research alongside clinical practice. It may be used for protected research time, mentoring, skills development, access to facilities and more – including help for clinicians returning to research after time away.

The goal of the pilot initiative is to strengthen the UK’s clinical research workforce, which plays a vital role in driving innovation, improving patient care and delivering better health outcomes for NHS patients.

Chris Attoe, Group Director of Strategy, said: “This is great news for research in our area. The funding will help clinical researchers turn new scientific discoveries into better care for patients.”

Chief Nurse, Vicky Mumford, presented certificates to team members who completed the standards required for the Care Certificate at a recent awards event, alongside those who undertook the additional training and competencies to become Co-Supervisors.

We are incredibly proud of all they have achieved and the difference they make every day 🩵
