The Archives and Museums services have joined up with the Local History Centre and the Haddington branch library in a historic building in Haddington, with a team dedicated to bringing the wealth of our historic culture to the whole community. The Archaeology team will also be joining in with events and exhibitions, and online activities and resources.

💡Local History Centre 50th Anniversary Newspaper Spotlight:
📰Courier front page this week 50 years ago featured a fire at Spittalrig Farm in Haddington. The fire destroyed a farm shed, 10 tons of hay, and severely damaged a muck spreader. Firemen from the Haddington unit of the Lothian and Borders Fire Service spent all day controlling the fire and preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings.

A wee departure from the usual Archive Service posts of sharing photos to highlight a fabulous collection of documents from Musselburgh

This collection, affectionately known as the ‘dirty docs’ (I think you can see why!) is now available to search and consult. The catalogue can be viewed at https://tinyurl.com/ybvdufdc

These papers cover an incredible amount of Musselburgh history from 1650 to the mid-20th century and includes items relating to crime, cholera, appointments of schoolteachers and council officials as well as information on the every day running of the Burgh such as dung collection and road repairs.

Almost 150 boxes of the papers were deposited with us by the National Records of Scotland in 2017 and it has been a 9 year project where the Archive team have been assisted by volunteers in cleaning, assessing, listing and repackaging.

Here are just some highlights we’ve selected and please contact us at [email protected] if you would like to pop in and view any of these records or anything else in our collection

We are underway today on our second day of live conservation of the Harvester painting by John Bellany. The conservation work wil need to finish today a few minutes before the advertised 4pm at around ten or quarter to 4pm.
