Hailsham Community Fire Station

On 20 July, we attended a wildfire in Abbots Wood, Arlington. A fire investigation was completed and it is believed the fire spread from books that had been deliberately set alight.

This incident highlighted how fires can have serious and often unintended consequences, spreading rapidly, putting lives, property and the wider community at risk.

As families prepare for exam results, it can be a good opportunity to have conversations with young people about making safe and responsible choices, including understanding the serious risks that fire can pose.

Yesterday the Hailsham crew were the first pump on attendance to this incident. They remained there for over 6 hours to save as much of our woods as they could. All crew returned fit and well albeit hot and tired.

We are currently in attendance at a fire in Abbots Wood near . Please avoid Abbots Wood and Robin Post Lane area. Further updates to follow.

UPDATE 6.10pm Crews are making steady progress tackling the fire.
An area measuring approximately 600 metres by 200 metres of gorse and trees is alight.
A police drone is being used to help assess the scene.
Please continue to avoid the area.

We’ve had such a busy month so far, we’ve almost turned out to as many calls this month compared to all of last month already. These have ranged from from dealing with grass fires to covering stations that are out on grass fires plus all the usual other calls, many of these grass fires have been caused by people having bonfires, so please be careful this time of year as resources are being used on incidents that could easily be avoided in this weather. 

Continuing hot and dry weather means there is an amber warning of severe wildfire conditions across much of central and southern England throughout the weekend and into next week, and a yellow 'elevated risk' warning across the rest of England.

Wildfire destroys fast. You can help protect our countryside.

We supported colleagues for a short time at this incident before returning to station but not before we were diverted to a lift rescue in Eastbourne!

We're at a fire in a field near the railway line by Telham Lane . We've sent two fire engines, two four-by-four vehicles and a water bowser to the scene. UPDATE 12.20: The water carrier has been stood down and is no longer needed. Crews are damping down hot spots.

Tuesday night saw our crew work for several hours along with colleagues from Eastbourne, Seaford and Crowborough to extinguish this fire. A long hard job but the fire was put out early hours of the morning, all crew safe and well.

A busy day yesterday for the crew, after covering Uckfield for the morning we were mobilised to the school fire in St Leonards early evening. We reached Bohemia Rd to be immediately called to a significant fire at Staplecross where we remained for several hours. Once we leave scene the work doesn’t always end, some late night hose cleaning down from that incident was required.
