There were 20 arrests made across Wealden last week.

5 of these were for driving offences:

🚗 2 drivers were arrested for being under the influence of drugs in Polegate and Crowborough.
🚙 1 was arrested for drink driving in Lower Willingdon.
🚗 1 was driving whilst disqualified in Crowborough, and was subsequently arrested.
🚙 1 failed to provide a specimen for analysis in Hailsham.

5 arrests were made for assault in Hailsham, Five Ashes, Uckfield and Crowborough.

2 people were arrested for criminal damage in Upper Dicker and Uckfield.

Other offences included theft of a motor vehicle, harassment and GBH.

Beware of scam calls from fraudsters falsely claiming to be from the "Sussex Police Cyber Crime Unit" ⚠️

On Saturday (10 October), we became aware of scammers targeting members of the public and requesting personal information, including passwords and other sensitive details.

It has been reported that the caller ID may appear to show a legitimate police phone number, however, these calls are being made from alternative sources.

Remember 👉 Sussex Police will never ask for your passwords, bank details, PIN numbers or other sensitive financial information over the phone.

These fraudsters may change the name of the police unit they claim to be from, so remain vigilant.

We would like to reassure the public that our phone lines are operating as normal.

If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from Sussex Police, let us know. You can do this by filling an online reporting form. Alternatively, you can contact us by calling 101.

Yesterday we asked: What would you do?

The text conversation we showed was a real fraud attempt, targeting a member of Sussex Police staff.

A fraudster posed as a family member, claiming they had a new phone number and needed financial help.

The messages appeared genuine and were designed to create a sense of urgency, a tactic commonly used by fraudsters to pressure people into acting quickly without stopping to think.

Thankfully, before sending any money, they carried out some simple checks in the background using trusted contact details they already held.

Remember:
📱 Never send money based solely on a text or WhatsApp message.
📞 Always contact the person using a trusted number you already have.
⚠️ Be suspicious of messages claiming someone has changed their phone number.
⏳ Take your time. Fraudsters want you to act before you think.

A quick phone call could save you hundreds, or even thousands, of pounds.

Drink driver detected in Uckfield 🚔

While out on patrol in the Uckfield area on Saturday 3 October, officers found a driver parked with their engine running.

The driver was required to provide a roadside breath test and blew just under double the legal drink-drive limit.

It's a simple message... one or the other, not both.

Choosing to drink and drive puts lives at risk, including your own, your passengers, pedestrians, cyclists and other road users. The consequences can be devastating.

Our officers regularly carry out patrols across local communities, proactively targeting the Fatal Five causes of serious collisions, including drink and drug driving.

We conduct roadside checks, act on information from the public and take positive action against those who choose to get behind the wheel while impaired.

Remember, even one poor decision can change lives forever.

Distraction scam 🚨

We're reminding retailers and shop staff to be vigilant for a common distraction scam involving cash transactions.

Offenders may ask to change a £10 or £20 note, then repeatedly alter their request, ask for different denominations, or attempt to swap money back and forth. The aim is to confuse staff during the transaction, often leaving the till short without anyone realising until later.

How to protect yourself and your business:
• Take your time and don't feel rushed.
• Count money carefully and keep the original note visible until the transaction is complete.
• If a customer repeatedly changes their request, stop and recount the cash before proceeding.
• If you become confused, cancel the transaction and start again.
• Ask a colleague or supervisor for assistance if needed.

Remember, legitimate customers won't mind if you take a moment to ensure the transaction is correct.

Officers made a total of 20 arrests in Wealden last week.

4 of these arrests were for drug related offences.

- 1 was for possession of class B drugs in Crowborough.
- 1 was for drug driving in Westham.
- 2 individuals were arrested for supplying class A and class B drugs.

8 individuals were arrested for assault in Hailsham, Uckfield, Hellingly, Framfield and Polegate.

5 arrests were made for criminal damage in Hailsham.

We also arrested someone for being drunk and disorderly in a public place in Polegate.
