The Mayor attended an event hosted by Halifax Civic Trust for the unveiling of a blue plaque to Sir Matthew Smith at No2 Heathfield, Free School Lane, Halifax.
Born in Halifax in 1879, Sir Matthew Smith became one of the most celebrated British painters of his generation. After studying in Manchester and later in Paris, he was strongly influenced by the vibrant colour and expressive techniques of the Fauvist movement. His work is especially admired for its rich colour, bold brushwork, and powerful still life's and figure paintings.
Sir Matthew exhibited widely in Britain and internationally and was elected a Royal Academician in 1949. In recognition of his contribution to British art, he was knighted in 1954. Today his paintings are held in major public collections including the Tate and many leading galleries.
