TRANSPORT FOR KEY WORKERS

Due to the reduction of bus services across the county, Devon County Council are trialling an on-demand subsidised taxi service for Devon residents for key workers accessing employment only.
This service is intended to replace those journeys which were previously made by bus - a subsidised flat fare will be charged.
Requests can only be made by email and should be sent to [email protected]
Please include the following information in your email:

NAME, ADDRESS, KEY WORKER STATUS, EMPLOYER / PAYROLL REF
JOURNEY REQUIREMENTS (pick up/drop off)
We will aim to respond to all requests as soon as possible during normal office hours – journeys should be booked 48 hours in advance of travel.

UK PM Boris Johnson has just announced a major ramping up of coronavirus measures.
Here are the major points of his speech:
From tonight, people in Britain will be allowed to leave their homes for only “very limited purposes” - shopping for basic necessities; for one form of exercise a day; for any medical need; and to travel to and from work when “absolutely necessary”
People are warned not to meet friends or family members who they do not live with
Shopping is only permitted for essentials like food and medicine, and people are advised to do it “as little as you can”
Police have powers to enforce the rules, including through fines and dispersing gatherings
All shops selling non-essential goods, such as clothing and electronic stores, are ordered to close
Libraries, playgrounds, outdoor gyms and places of worship are to close
All gatherings of more than two people in public - excluding people you live with - are banned
All social events, including weddings and baptisms are banned
Funerals are not included in the new restrictions
Parks will remain open for exercise but gatherings will be dispersed
Restrictions “under constant review” and will be checked again in three weeks. They will be relaxed “if the evidence shows we are able to”

Due to the changes in collections dates and collection times across the district, residents are being reminded that:
· black bags need to be put for collection by 5:45am
· Recycling and garden waste need to be put out by 7:00am

Residents can also check their revised waste collection dates by entering their post code via this link http://www.torridge.gov.uk/forms/firmstep/wastecalendar.html

Dear all

As part of the Council’s upcoming changes, we are rolling out our new food caddies and our new black boxes to a number of properties across the district.

Next Monday (23rd April) those properties in the Ashwater, Higher Priestacott, Halwill, Whimble Hollacombe and Blagaton areas, who have their recycling collected that day, will be handed a food caddy and a black box.

The food caddie has been specially designed so that once filled, the handle of the caddie is pulled forward and this locks the caddie and prevents any disturbance by rodents, birds or other animals. Residents will be able to throw all raw and cooked food waste (including peelings, egg shells and even bones) into the caddies which can be lined with compostable bags or newspaper. All of this material will then be recycled.

The black box is for glass bottles and glass jars only.

Those residents will be able to use these new container from Monday 30th April and should place these containers alongside their green boxes (for plastics) brown bags (for cardboard) and green bags (for paper) at the kerbside as usual. One of our new Romaquip recycling vehicles will collect the recycling.

There may be residents in the area who do not receive their new recycling caddies; this is because they are not on the round of the vehicle that is being changed to a new Romaquip vehicle specially designed for recycling including food waste.

All areas will eventually be transferred to new Romaquip vehicles and will be delivered receptacles prior and issued with leaflets.

Never hurts to restate the obvious so-
The County Council is reminding people of the following advice:
• Avoid overnight travel unless absolutely essential as roads will always be more hazardous at night with less traffic and colder temperatures;
• Never assume a road has been salted. Remember that showers or rain will wash salt off roads leaving them prone to ice, and in extreme cold even salting will not stop ice from forming;
• Allow additional time for your journey and reduce your speed;
• Drive with care and according to the conditions
• If you have vulnerable or elderly neighbours, think about how they could possibly be helped through the cold spell;
• Try to maintain indoor temperatures to at least 18C, particularly if you are not mobile, have long term illness or are 65 or over
• Listen to local radio for updates on current weather conditions and ensure you are stocked with food and medications.

Torridge District Neighbourhood Watch
Torridge NHW covers the areas of Bideford, Holsworthy and Torrington and we are proud that it is one of the safest places in England and Wales. Our aim is to help the police to keep it as a very low crime area by “increasing the awareness of crime without increasing the fear of crime”. The public plays a vital role in helping the police to reduce crime and NHW is a popular way for people of all ages and backgrounds to get involved. It is a proven fact that neighbourhoods covered by a Watch scheme tend to be less likely to become victims of burglary and other crimes. Watch schemes can vary in size from just two or three residents up to several dozen on an estate or block of flats and the schemes help to foster neighbourliness and community spirit which go towards building better communities.
