Have you ever spotted the two stunning mosaics at the top of the staircase of our Cadzow Street entrance? For May's Nostalgia Day we're diving into the history of how they came to be homed in Hamilton Town House.

The plaque at the bottom of the first mosaic reads " These Mosaics and the Busts in the Vestibule Downstairs were Presented to The Town Hall of Hamilton by The Daughters of The Late J.R Cochrane Esquire of Calder Glen Blantyre. May 1925".

J.R Cochrane was a member of the Liberal Party and served as Justice of the Pease for Blantyre from 1881. He married Mary Anne Howden, and together they had 7 children; Richard, James, Adelaide, Victoria, Louisa, Laura, Charlotte and Muriel.

In 1883 the family's youngest son Richard was killed trying to cross the trainline that ran near the family home in the Calder Glen Eastate. The Cochrane's built a Memorial Chapel on the Estate in his honour which featured beautiful stained glass windows and mosaics.

In 1921 J.R Cochrane died and left much of Calder Glen Estate to his two unmarried daughters, Laura and Charlotte. Laura was heavily involved in fundraising for local events and charities, and Charlotte was president of the Blantyre Child Welfare Centre. The sisters took the decision to donate the stained glass from the Memorial Chapel to Burleigh Church on Glasgow Road and the mosaics to Hamilton Town Hall, now the Town House where they still live to this day.
