Something extraordinary is taking shape in the heart of Harlow.

The new Playhouse Quarter will be a home for live performance, exhibitions, music education and professional recording studios - alongside the Gibberd Gallery, creative spaces, a new café and restaurant, and an outdoor stage set within a vibrant new public square and pocket park.

A place to perform, create, learn, meet and belong - and a cultural destination that will draw people from across the region.

Planning permission has now been granted to transform the privately owned former YMCA site on Fourth Avenue into 264 new rented homes dedicated to Harlow’s key workers, alongside 20 shared ownership homes for Harlow's key workers.

Right next door to Princess Alexandra Hospital, the new homes will be prioritised for NHS staff, as well as police officers, teachers and other key workers in Harlow.

For decades, the YMCA site provided accommodation for people living and working in Harlow. Now, it will return to that purpose for a new generation with a modern high-quality development.

We’ve worked to unlock this major private investment and secured the long-term use of the homes for key workers, with affordability linked to NHS salary bands.

🏗️ A derelict site brought back to life.
🏡 New homes for Harlow’s key workers.
📈 Major private investment in our town.
💪 Helping Harlow attract and keep the people our essential services rely on.

We’re securing our future. We’re Building Harlow’s Future.
