⚽️🇳🇱AFC(H) Football Overseas Sports Visit to the Netherlands 🇳🇱⚽️

After developing their talents at weekly Sports & Skills sessions, 16 Junior Soldiers (JS) and 5 staff members have travelled to Arnhem, Netherlands to test their skills!

The team competed against two Dutch military preparation colleges, gaining valuable exposure to high-quality opposition and professional coaching environments in an international setting 🏆

During their highly competitive opening match with Graafschap College, JS demonstrated professionalism, technical skill, and composure throughout- securing a comfortable 7–2 victory. Their next match against Dulon College saw another strong performance, with AFC(H) coming out on top with a final score of 8-2! 🏅

This Overseas Sports Visit (OSV) was organised to highlight the opportunities available within the Army while fostering resilience, discipline, confidence, and adaptability away from AFC(H). Additionally, the experience provides JS with the chance to observe different coaching and leadership styles, while reinforcing the Army’s core Values and Standards ✅

Sport is a vital tool in developing capable soldiers and cohesive teams. Through football, participants are learning the importance of trust, teamwork, communication, humility, and controlled aggression - all qualities that contribute directly to military effectiveness 💪

A sincere thank you to British Army Sport for their support and funding, which made this transformative OSV possible.

🇦🇹 Greetings from the Austrian Alps! 🏔️🏃‍♂️

What started as a weekly Sports & Skills cross-country session at AFC(H) has developed into an unforgettable Overseas Sports Visit (OSV) for a group of Junior Soldiers (JS).

After months of training and competing at Army Sports North Cross Country League fixtures, the team travelled to Bad Ischl, Austria, to develop their endurance, resilience and confidence in one of Europe’s most spectacular environments.

Training runs took place around iconic alpine locations including Altaussee, Gosausee, Grundlsee and Fuschl am See, providing both physical challenge and unforgettable experiences.

The highlight of the visit was the Mondsee Half Marathon, where many of the JS completed the distance for the very first time. Surrounded by mountains, lakes and alpine villages, it was a fitting reward for their hard work, commitment and determination.

Sport continues to play a vital role in developing better soldiers and stronger teams. Through cross-country running, the group has developed discipline, teamwork, resilience and self-belief – qualities that transfer directly into military life.

For many of these JS, this was their first experience of travelling overseas and competing in an international sporting event, making it not only a sporting achievement, but a life experience they will never forget. 💪🏃‍♂️🏔️

🇺🇸 AFC(H) Brazilian Ju-Jitsu Tour, Texas 🇺🇸

The final session of the visit concluded with an invaluable Q&A featuring John Danaher and Gordon Ryan, giving the Junior Soldiers a unique opportunity to learn from two of the most respected figures in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu 🏆

Upon completion of training, the Junior Soldiers enjoyed a well-earned cultural day and period of rest, experiencing the best of Texan hospitality. The day began with a traditional American-style breakfast and exploring downtown Austin, taking in its famous live music venues and vibrant atmosphere. A visit to a cowboy store gave the soldiers the opportunity to purchase authentic Texan cowboy hats 🤠

It was a fitting conclusion to what many will consider a dream experience—an unforgettable opportunity that combined world-class training, personal development, and cultural immersion 🌎

The impact of the visit will continue long after the team’s return to the UK. From next week, under the guidance of Major Maslin, two Junior Soldiers each week will deliver sessions to members of Cambrai Company who are at the beginning of their own Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey. Sharing the knowledge, skills, and experiences gained in Texas completes the circle of learning and development, with Junior Soldiers already giving back to their peers and helping to build the next generation of practitioners 🏅

Hi “Y’all” from Texas, USA 🇺🇸

After completing 16 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) lessons at AFC, 8 Junior Soldiers (JS) and 2 members of staff have travelled to Austin, Texas, to take their training to the next level.

The team is currently training at Kingsway Jiu Jitsu, widely recognised as one of the world’s leading BJJ gyms and home to elite level coaching.

This Overseas Sports Visit (OSV) has been designed to showcase what the Army can offer while developing resilience, discipline, confidence, and adaptability in a demanding environment away from AFC (H). The experience is also exposing JS to different coaching and leadership styles while reinforcing the Army’s Values and Standards.

Sport plays a vital role in developing better soldiers and stronger teams. Through BJJ, the group is learning the importance of trust, teamwork, communication, humility, and controlled aggression, all qualities that directly transfer to military life and operational effectiveness. Shared challenges like this build stronger bonds, improve morale, and develop individuals who are better prepared to lead and perform under pressure.

This has been an outstanding opportunity for the team to push their limits, grow as individuals, and represent AFC (H) on an international stage. 💪🔥

A huge thank you to: Sports Lottery@Berlin Infantry Memorial Trust Fund

for their support and funding in making this transformational OSV possible.

For some of these JS, this is their first time travelling outside of the UK, making it not only a world class sporting opportunity, but also a cultural experience that will leave a lasting impact on everyone involved.

🪖Ex LION’S SPIRIT🎖️

This month, Junior Soldiers (JS) and staff from AFC(H) embarked on an overseas exercise to Normandy, France to learn about the D-Day Landings and WWII history.

The exercise introduced JS to key historical sites such as Merville Battery and Gold Beach, alongside local museums, and poignant visits to war grave sites and memorials.

By learning more about the history that underpins British military heritage, JS gain a better understanding of the Realities of War as experienced by the service men and women before them.
