🏥 From inspiring the next generation of nurses to supporting children, young people, and families, Duncan Burton saw some fantastic work happening in Middlesbrough yesterday.

The Chief Nursing Officer for England first visited Teesside University for the final face to face session of the Bridge to Nursing Programme, before meeting health visitors and school nurses at the Middlesbrough 0-11 healthy Child Programme Team.

🧑‍⚕️ Bridge to Nursing | Launched earlier this year by The Talent Foundry and delivered with Teesside University, local NHS partners, and ourselves, the programme through mentorship and face to face workshops provides support to young people in Tees Valley to to apply for pre reg nursing programmes.

It’s helping to support young people to become part of the future nursing workforce in the communities that they live - helping to improve social mobility and tackle health inequalities.

🫂 0-11 team & Healthier Together | Health Visitors and School Nurses using their public health nursing skills and knowledge have such an important role in supporting families and communities to give children the best start in life and, working with others across health and care, the team is supporting young people with their health and wellbeing as they grow.

It’s fantastic to see the difference they’re making in our communities and the positive impact they’re having on the health and future of local families.

💥 HDFT Impact helped Oakdale ward identify the need for a new blood gas machine so staff can test samples on the ward rather than in another part of the hospital.

Our Research Midwives recently visited maternity services across the Trust with the maternity research trolley to raise awareness of ongoing maternity studies.

The trolley included cakes decorated with “1,000” to celebrate a major milestone for the Generation Study, which has now seen over 1,100 local participants recruited alongside successful recruitment to the BaBi Harrogate, GILD and DOMINO studies.🧁🎉

Well done to the Research Midwives for their dedication to maternity research, and thank you to everyone who has taken part in a study and helped shape the future of care for local families.

Thanks to the generosity of our staff, volunteers, patients, visitors and local supporters, the Macmillan fundraising event raised an incredible £1,582.30 for Macmillan Cancer Support and the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre.🎉🙌

Thank you to the Mayor of Harrogate, Viv Poskitt for showing her support at the event and everyone else who gave their time, donated prizes, baked cakes and helped make the day such a success.

Every contribution makes a real difference to the lives of those affected by cancer.💚

Congratulations to the Learning and Professional Development Team who have been shortlisted for the prestigious Nursing Times Workforce Awards 2026!

The team lead the Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) Nursing Preceptorship Programme which supports newly registered nurses across the HDFT footprint as they transition from student to confident practitioners.

Over the past decade, the programme has continued to evolve and provides newly registered nurses with a blend of clinical and professional development opportunities. The aim is to equip nurses with the skills, confidence and resilience needed for their future careers.

This national recognition is a testament to the dedication of the Practice Educator and Learning and Professional Development teams, as well as the many clinical teams, line managers and preceptors who support newly registered nurses every day.

The Nursing Times Workforce Awards will take place in London on Saturday 24 November, where organisations from across the country will come together to celebrate excellence, innovation, and outstanding achievements in workforce development.
