Help! How can I teach more inclusively? | TEFL Teaching Tips

Help! My materials are not particularly inclusive and as a busy teacher I don’t know what to do to make my classes more inclusive. What should I do?

Presented by Neil Harris - Director of Online Learning and Teacher Training @ CELT Language School

Sign up for the workshop here: https://gtefl.com/upcoming-webinar/

Introduction:
Is inclusion really such a big deal in English language teaching? Surely busy teachers concerned with planning and delivering engaging lessons and keeping up to date with marking and admin have enough to deal with without worrying about issues like inclusion? This masterclass argues that the opposite is true and that when we attend to inclusion we act to the benefit of the whole class and not just those who may risk exclusion because of their ethnicity, gender or identity. The masterclass begins by considering some of the global frameworks which exist to encourage an inclusive approach to education generally and then considers a number of easy to implement ideas to make your classroom a more inclusive space. The session then considers what it means to be treated inclusively as a teacher and how ELT often acts to exclude teachers who have been traditionally been pejoratively labelled as non-native. Come along, be challenged and be supported to make a difference to your teaching and your learners’ classroom experience.

Opinion Dictation to Spark Discussion | TEFL webinar | ELT Masterclass

This clip shows how to use an opinion dictation activity to get students thinking and talking. Instead of writing full sentences, students mark their level of agreement on a line for statements like “Dictation is old school.” It’s a simple, no-pressure way to get students actively listening and reflecting on their ideas about dictation, which can lead to some great discussions about its role in language learning.

📍 Takeaway: Try using opinion dictation to encourage your students to share their thoughts and spark meaningful conversations. It’s easy to set up and gets them engaged without any writing pressure.

How Dictation Can Go Wrong | TEFL webinar | ELT Masterclass

This clip discusses how dictation can go wrong when the sentences are irrelevant or disconnected from the students' lives. For example, using generic sentences like "Marcus goes fishing every weekend" can make dictation feel dull and unrelatable. To avoid this, it’s important to personalise dictation tasks, making them meaningful and relevant to your students' interests and experiences.

📍 Takeaway: Dictation goes wrong when it’s not tailored to your students. Personalising sentences helps keep the activity engaging and relevant, making it a more effective tool for learning.

The Purpose of Dictation | TEFL webinar | ELT Masterclass

This clip highlights how dictation can be a great tool for promoting peer learning. Working in pairs or small groups, students can collaborate, help each other, and take more responsibility for their learning. It’s a way to encourage learner autonomy, especially when students dictate to one another instead of always relying on the teacher. Plus, students tend to enjoy this collaborative approach.

📍 Takeaway: Use peer dictation to encourage collaboration and learner independence. It not only boosts engagement but also helps students take ownership of their learning.

Who Corrects Dictation | TEFL webinar | ELT Masterclass

This clip challenges the traditional approach of teachers correcting dictations themselves. Instead, it suggests letting students correct their own or each other's work. By doing so, students are more likely to notice their mistakes, reflect on them, and take steps to improve. This method fosters accountability and deeper learning, as students begin to recognise recurring errors, such as misspellings or missing prepositions, and actively work on addressing them.

📍 Takeaway: Let students correct their own or each other’s dictations to encourage self-reflection and ownership of their learning. It’s a more engaging and impactful way for them to improve.

Focus on Keywords in Dictation | TEFL webinar | ELT Masterclass

This clip emphasises that students don’t always need to write down every word during dictation. By asking them to note only 1 or 2 key words and later reconstruct the message, teachers can shift the focus to listening for meaning rather than perfection. This approach helps students build confidence with listening, especially those who find it challenging or frustrating to catch every single word. It’s a way to modernise dictation, making it more about active listening and less about rote transcription.

📍 Takeaway: Use keyword-focused dictation to help students develop their listening skills. This technique reduces stress and teaches them to focus on the main message, not every word.
