Alfred Cooper was possibly the most connected surgeon in Victorian England having married into minor nobility and counted baronets, earls, and princes among his circle of friends.

An interest in the treatment of venereal disease gave him unorthodox access to the upper echelons of society where his counsel helped avoid potential scandal. The aristocracy jokingly referred to his visiting horse and carriage as the ‘clap trap.’

Cooper convinced wealthy patrons to support St Mark’s Hospital and helped organise a succession of fundraisers including one in London’s West End where stars of the day like Lillie Langtry performed in 1902.

TikTok is providing clinicians with an unfiltered look into the experiences of young people living with conditions including ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease and pouch surgery.

Orestis Argyriou, a research fellow and trainee surgeon at St Mark’s Hospital in Park Royal, Ealing, says the platform offers a unique look into what matters most to young patients which, in turn, could help clinicians fine-tune existing services.

The video posts include tackling stigma, the emotional impact of surgery, practical tips about living with a stoma and detailing personal surgical journeys.

Orestis has presented his findings at several coloproctology conferences at home and abroad.

A shortage of male surgeons during the Great War forced St Mark’s to do the unthinkable when it failed to find a suitable candidate for the position of house surgeon.

Anna Keilin was the first female surgeon appointed by the hospital in 1918 - albeit on a temporary basis - and spent much of her time looking after wounded soldiers.

Senior surgeon John Percy Lockhart-Mummery noted that Anna was "the greatest assistance to us during a most difficult period and we shall always be grateful for her services.”

Carolynne Vaizey was the first female consultant surgeon appointed at the hospital more than 70 years later.

Randolph Masiglat’s commitment to patients’ pre and post-operative care now takes him into theatre as a trainee Robotic Surgery Surgical Care Practitioner at St Mark's Hopsital.

“I help set up and dock the robot and assist in various robotic colorectal procedures.

"It’s an interesting perspective as an advanced clinical practitioner as I get an in-depth understanding of the surgery and take part in procedures, such as closing the patient's wound after the robotic procedure is completed."

St Mark’s has been using a da Vinci robot for colorectal surgery since 2018 and is close to completing its 1000th robotic procedure.
