Detectives investigating the death of a man in Hartlepool are appealing for new witnesses to come forward as enquiries continue.
Steven Streeting, 50, sadly died following an incident in the early hours of Monday 25 May, 2026, in the Church Street/Church Square area of Hartlepool town centre. A second man also suffered injuries and was treated in hospital before being discharged.
A 32-year-old man has been charged with murder and attempted grievous bodily harm and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on 27 July.
Despite significant progress in the investigation, detectives believe there are still individuals who were present in the town centre that evening who have yet to be identified, and who may hold vital information or mobile phone footage.
Senior Investigating Officer, DCI John Bonner Homicide & Major Investigation Team, said: "Today marks one month since an assault took place in Hartlepool town centre in which Steven Streeting suffered a serious head injury and sadly passed away. This remains a tragic incident, and our thoughts continue to be with his family.
“We know that there was a significant number of people in the town centre at the time, particularly in the moments before and immediately afterwards. Whilst we have made substantial progress and identified a number of witnesses, it is clear there are still individuals who were present who we have not yet had the opportunity to speak with.
“As this one-month point passes, I would ask anyone who was in the area that evening, who has not yet come forward, to reconsider doing so. I am appealing directly to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has photographs or mobile phone footage from that time, to get in touch.
“Even if you did not see the incident itself, you may have seen the movements or behaviour of those involved earlier in the evening or afterwards. Information such as this could be crucial in helping us fully understand how and why this incident occurred.
“I recognise that some people may feel apprehensive about speaking to the police or may be impacted by what they witnessed. I want to reassure you that support is available, and anyone who comes forward will be treated with sensitivity and respect throughout. Where required, we can also provide access to appropriate support services, including victim care services."
