Last night, Hastings Coastguard Rescue Team joined colleagues from HM Coastguard- Bexhill for a joint training session focused on refreshing our Lost and Missing Person Search skills.

The scenario began with teams being tasked to locate an object, which then developed into a full missing person search exercise.

Crews used structured search techniques, local knowledge, navigation, communication and team coordination to quickly locate the casualty.

Once found, the scenario developed further, requiring teams to draw on another key Coastguard Rescue skill: casualty care and evacuation. Due to the nature of the terrain, crews deployed the evacuation stretcher and worked together to safely move the casualty to the nearest safe location for onward transport to the next level of care.

Coastguard Rescue Teams are trained to respond to a wide range of incidents, including lost and missing person searches, casualty care, difficult terrain evacuation, water rescue, mud rescue, rope rescue, flood response and support to other emergency services.

Training nights like this are vital in keeping those skills sharp and ensuring teams can work effectively together when the call comes.
Great effort from everyone involved.

Last night, the team, alongside our colleagues from HM Coastguard- Bexhill was tasked to assist Sussex Police with an incident on Hastings seafront.

Shortly after deploying a search team to begin searching the area, we received the welcome news that the incident had been resolved safely inland. As a result, all Coastguard resources were stood down.

This was another excellent example of the strong interoperability between emergency services and neighbouring Coastguard Rescue Teams, working together to provide a rapid and effective response whenever needed.

Thankfully, this incident had a positive outcome, and we were able to return to station shortly afterwards.

This evening, we were tasked to assist four people and a dog who had become cut off by the tide beneath the cliffs.

Working alongside colleagues from HM Coastguard- Bexhill Rye Bay Coastguard Rescue Team, RNLI Hastings Lifeboat Station and Pett Level Independent Rescue Boat, the casualties were located and safely escorted from the beach before the incoming tide further restricted their escape route.

Thankfully, everyone involved, including their four-legged companion, was brought to safety without injury.

This incident is a timely reminder that the tide can rise far quicker than many people expect, particularly beneath cliffs where exits can quickly disappear.

If you're planning a coastal walk:

🌊 Check the tide times before you set off.
πŸ“± Carry a means of calling for help.
πŸ‘Ÿ Be prepared to turn back early if your route becomes unsafe.

A huge thank you to all the agencies involved for another excellent example of multi-agency teamwork.

If you see anyone in difficulty on the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Multi-Agency Water Safety & Rescue Skills Share – Hastings

A great evening bringing together partner agencies for a Water Safety & Rescue Skills Share hosted at

It was excellent to work alongside colleagues from ESFRS Bohemia Road Fire Station East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service (ESFRS) , SECAMB Community Responders, Rother Responders , as well as our flank stations and HM Coastguard Rye Bay.

The session focused on sharing practical skills, equipment, and real-world experience β€” from shoreside stabilisation through to in-water rescue techniques. More importantly, it provided valuable time to strengthen relationships, align approaches, and learn from each other in an open and supportive environment.

These kinds of informal, collaborative sessions are vital. When incidents happen, it’s the understanding, trust, and shared knowledge built on evenings like this that make the difference.
A big thank you to everyone who attended and contributed β€” a really positive and productive evening.
