Having completed harvest last week, 2026 marks the earliest and fastest harvest our current farm team has ever delivered.

We shared photographs of this year's harvest a few weeks ago and were pleased to receive a message from a former member of the Hatfield Park forestry team, who supported operations across the Estate more than fifty years ago.

He kindly provided these photographs of bales being stacked and transported in 1974. While methods have changed considerably since then, the purpose behind the work remains unchanged. The same fields continue to be farmed by people who know the land well and take genuine pride in working it.

We are grateful to him for sharing these photographs, and to everyone who has contributed to a harvest here over the decades. ๐ŸŒพ

Displayed in Hatfield House's Long Gallery is the historic rock crystal collection, part of the family's decorative arts collection gathered over centuries. It's not a single, cohesive set, and that's part of its fascination.

Most of the pieces on display first belonged to William Cecil, Lord Burghley, before passing to his son, Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury, the builder of Hatfield House. Each piece reflects the tastes, ambitions and connections of those who acquired it, and together they tell a story about why people collect at all.

That question sits at the heart of our upcoming lecture, The Art of Collecting, which explores the history and psychology of collecting, with the rock crystal as one of its case studies. Guests will be able to view the collection in the Long Gallery before and after the talk.
