After 21 years of dedicated service, Firefighter Martin Cole is hanging up his boots.

Throughout his time with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, Martin has shown unwavering commitment, professionalism, and a true sense of duty to his community.

From attending incidents to supporting his colleagues, his contribution has made a lasting impact both on and off the run.

Today, we recognise and thank Martin for over two decades of service. His experience, reliability, and team spirit will be greatly missed around the station.

We wish him a long, happy, and well-earned retirement.

Should you be interested in becoming an on-call firefighter, drop us a message for more information.

🚒🐾 Animal Rescue – Hatherleigh Fire Station 🐾🚒

Earlier today, Hatherleigh Fire Station were called to an unusual animal rescue involving two dogs who had managed to get themselves tangled together.

Working calmly and carefully, firefighters were able to safely release them without injury. We’re pleased to say both dogs are now free… and still very much friends! 🐶🐶

A great outcome and a reminder that we’re here for all members of the community — two-legged or four.

(Permission was given by thier owners for us to post on Facebook)

☀️ Sun’s out… bikes out. 🏍️

With brighter days and dry roads, we’re seeing more motorcyclists back out enjoying the ride — but this is also when serious incidents start to rise.

Whether you're heading out for a quick ride or a long run:
• Slow it down on bends
• Stay visible – don’t assume you’ve been seen
• Wear the right gear, every ride
• Leave space and expect the unexpected

■ Drivers — take that extra second at junctions. A quick look can save a life.

We want everyone to enjoy the weather and get home safe.

Ride smart. Ride safe.

A bit of a read, but make it to the end....

Being an on-call firefighter isn’t about standing in a station all day waiting for sirens. It’s about living your normal life — going to work, spending time with family, being part of your community — and then, when the pager goes off, everything changes.

In that moment, ordinary people become something more.

You leave the dinner table, step away from your job, or climb out of bed in the middle of the night because someone, somewhere, needs help. You don’t do it for applause, and you don’t do it for recognition. You do it because you know that when your community needs you, you’ll be there.

Being on-call means commitment. It means training in your spare time, pushing yourself to be ready for the unknown, and standing shoulder to shoulder with a team that trusts each other completely. The people beside you become more than colleagues — they become family.

On-call firefighters are proof that courage doesn’t always wear a uniform full time. Sometimes it’s worn by the neighbour down the road, the mechanic in the garage, the farmer in the field, or the parent at the school gates.

Ordinary people.
Extraordinary commitment.
Always ready when it matters most.

Come see us on Thursday evenings between 7 and 9pm and see if you could make a difference.
