We do like meeting people, away from our day job 😂, so when we were invited to attend the Drigg and Carleton Gala we jumped at the chance. This will be the second year we have attended this event, organised by Drigg Events, and if it is anything like last year it will be a good day out.

Last year was a bonus for the team as we gained a new member. Tel is undergoing his initial training and assessments and should be operational in time for the summer.

Come down and meet the team, who will be happy to answer any questions you may have. We will also have a few bits and pieces to hand out. See you there.

Yet more fatalities reported on the news this evening. This brings the total of water related deaths, during the last couple of weeks, to 16. Unfortunately, it regulatly happens during spells of hot weather

Cold water shock can happen in seconds, and it can be fatal.

The average sea temperature around the coast of the UK is 12°C. Inland waterways such as lakes, tarns, reservoirs, canals etc. Look inviting during hot weather. But they hold many dangers.

Even strong swimmers can be caught out by the sudden gasp reflex, panic, breathing difficulties and muscle weakness caused by cold water.

Please don’t take the risk. Only swim in lifeguarded areas, never swim alone, and make sure children and young people are always supervised near open water.

Learn about the RNLI Float to Live initiative.

This is something everyone should know. Talk about it with your family, friends and community; it could save a life.

Please share this post and help spread awareness.

With more sad news coming in from around the country, the RNLI in conjunction with others are attempting to spread awareness of self help through the Float to Live campaign.

The National Water Safety Forum's 2025 Water Incident Database (WAID) released today gives insight into water-related fatalities in the UK.

Many of those who sadly lost their lives were not intending to enter the water, with cold water shock remaining a hazard. Cold water shock is the body’s involuntary response to sudden immersion in cold water. It causes gasping, panic and loss of swimming ability.

If you find yourself in trouble in the water, remember Float to Live – float on your back with your ears submerged until you can control your breathing and become more acclimatised to the water temperature.

Move your arms gently to help keep you afloat. We all float differently, so it doesn't matter if your legs sink.

If you see someone in difficulty at the coast or on one of the four navigable lakes, Windermere, Coniston, Ullswater or Derwent Water, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

It's bank holiday weekend! 😀

Weather is looking good - especially into next week as high temperatures are predicted.

We want people to enjoy our coastlines but please do take care - even if the air is warm the water is still very very cold 🥶

Be aware that the average UK sea temperature, in summer, is only 12°.

We are urging beachgoers to enjoy the nice weather safely and responsibly by following these key tips:

• Choose a lifeguarded beach and check the local signs ⚠️
• Have a chat to the lifeguards, ask about any specific risks there may be.
• Supervise children at all times and arrange a meeting point if you get separated 🧒
• Leave swimming pool inflatables at home - they are not suitable for the sea

Make yourself aware of the latest RNLI campaign, which contains some very good information regarding 'Float to Live'

In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard 📱
