RBG Kew is on a mission to become climate positive by 2030, and as part of this journey we've reduced fossil fuel consumption by 22% in one year! 🌿

Here at Wakehurst, projects that have supported this reduction include 130KW of roof-mounted solar panels installed on the Millennium Seed Bank, generating 20% of the building’s total electricity usage, and 8% of the total site’s usage. ☀️ In the Elizabethan Mansion, we also replaced inefficient oil boilers with electric heat pumps, halving direct heating emissions.

Growing Futures at Kew Wakehurst and the Knepp Wildland Foundation🌱 Over four packed days in May and August, we welcomed 50 16-25-year-olds for a hands-on introduction to careers in nature restoration and ecology.

At Wakehurst, the groups got stuck into practical horticulture and toured the Nursery, whilst also contributing to real scientific research with pollinator counts and woodland surveys 🌳

With the Knepp Wildland Foundation, they explored rewilding in action at Knepp and learnt about the Weald to Waves project - a 100-mile+ nature corridor connecting landscapes across Sussex 🌿

Throughout the sessions, they heard about career paths at both sites, inspiring an interest for futures in green careers.

Did you know? We've counted around 27 individual species of hoverfly, moth and bee on our American Prairie over the past few years! 🐝🦋

The thriving population of hoverflies brings multiple ecosystem benefits in particular, as hoverflies are the only pollinators with zoophagous larvae – feeding on pests such as aphids. The grown adults are then prolific pollinators, boosting the prairie's biodiversity 🌿
