Learning Disability Week takes place this year from Monday 15th of June until Sunday the 21st of June. The theme for 2026 is "Do you see me?", which is all about people with learning disabilities being seen, heard and valued.

Yesterday, our lead nurse Nic attended a health event run by Lead the Way. We offered mini health checks and had some good conversations with people around the importance of health and wellbeing for people with learning disabilities.

Other members of the team attended a learning disability away day to showcase some of the things we are proud of in our team. We talked about the blood desensitisation pathway and the behaviour pathway. Our admin supervisor talked about the friendly and caring welcome that people receive when they come to our service. We shared success stories from the team.

It's Carers Week 2026, this years theme is building carer friendly communities. As a team we value carers and all they do. We try our best to support carers to get the opportunities and help they need.

This week we were happy that Unique Ways - Supporting Families with Disabled Children gave us the opportunity to share information with family voice Calderdale, which is a parent carer forum.

Have you let your GP practice know that you are a carer? This can help to provide you with useful support, advice and information. https://www.carersuk.org/help-and-advice/your-health-and-wellbeing/talking-to-your-gp/

Yesterday we attended a networking event for central halifax pcn. Many valuable conversations were held to strengthen partnership working across services. It was a great opportunity to share the health and hospital passport for people who have a learning disability.

The health and hospital passport supports healthcare services to meet legal duties under the Equality Act 2010 (reasonable adjustments) and the Mental Capacity Act 2005. It can signpost to key care plans, including eating and drinking, communication, and advanced care plans.

Last week we attended the Be Seen and Be Screened event by Pennine GP alliance and Central Halifax Primary Care Network. There were a number of valuable discussions, and it was fantastic to see such a strong turnout, including colleagues from Pennine Breast Services.

Please find below a link to resources to encourage people to check their own bodies, alongside going for annual health checks and screenings. Remember you have the power!
