Last year we supported 19 local groups with over £60,000 in funding, for projects that made a difference locally.

💐 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝘄𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 💐

Thanks for all the love you've shown for the hanging baskets this year! We're so glad they've brought some colour and cheer through the summer season.

While some are still going strong, most of the blooms are coming to their natural end as the season changes. They will soon be removed, after which they'll be sustainably composted. 🌱
We will work as efficiently as possible, but apologies in advance if there are any inconveniences or obstructions caused as we take them down and clear up any mess.

Many thanks to all the retailers and organisations who have taken part this year in helping to brighten up Hebden Royd!

🦉 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗛𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗼𝘄 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗢𝘄𝗹 𝗕𝗼𝘅 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀! 🦉

We are delighted to share that our Barn Owl box, installed in 2024 at High Hirst Woodmeadow Project, has this year successfully hosted a family of Barn Owls!

It was a big family too, with SIX young barn owls calling our box home - the average is four! Fingers crossed that this lot go on to lead healthy, happy lives and that the box continues to provide a safe place for local barn owls to raise their families.

With thanks to Halifax Scientific Society and Calderdale Raptor Study Group for all their support in monitoring the owls.

🍇🍏 High Hirst Fruit Harvest 🍏🍇

Thanks to a bumper fruit harvest on High Hirst Woodmeadow Project, we've been able to donate some delicious apples and damsons to Calder Grub Hub.

They'll be used to create tasty vegan meals that Calder Grub Hub cook for the community every Wednesday, provided free to anyone who needs them.

Hebden Bridge bat walk 🦇

We went on a bat walk organised by the West Yorkshire Bat Group and Hebden Royd Town Council. It was the most fun to wave our detectors in the air and listen into bat chat. It blows my mind that there is all this noise going on all the time that is too high frequency for us.

Random BAT FACTS*

Bats are so loud (in their frequency) that if we heard them it would deafen us

I knew bats were mammals, but didn’t realise they breastfed and only had one baby a season

They form maternal colonies which might have 20-40 mothers and babies in them - this is what we have in our attic (scroll for video of them doing a dawn swarm)

I was worried about our bats and the hot weather but they are resilient and would leave a roost if too hot - they would carry their babies as they flew off

A pipistrelle bat (the most common here/in houses) might eat 3000 midges a night

Not a fact but a question - why do all horror films use the sound of bats for aliens? I jumped out of my skin when we switched on the dectector and I though predator was there or I was in the quiet place!

🏃 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗿’𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆! 🏃

On Sunday 13th September, the Mayor of Hebden Royd Town Council, Cllr Steve Woodhead, will be taking part in the Great North Run to raise funds for Calder Valley Search & Rescue Team (CVSRT).

CVSRT is a 100% volunteer-run charity that saves lives in wild, remote, and urban environments. Operating on behalf of West Yorkshire Police, they provide crucial emergency support, including missing person searches, swift-water rescue, and technical crag evacuations.

Each Mayor choses a charity to support throughout their Mayoral year. This year, our Mayor Cllr. Steve Woodhead has chosen to support CVSRT because they provide a vital lifesaving service in our beautiful but often challenging landscape.

The Mayor’s half marathon comes hot on the heels of his Consort and granddaughter Winnie Woodhead’s cycle challenge in July. Cycling 60 miles from Mytholmroyd to Manchester, 8-year-old Winnie raised nearly £4,000 for CVSRT!

The Mayor’s future fundraising events include a Charity Quiz on Wed 20th January at Olive’s Cafe Bistro in Mytholmroyd, and a Ceilidh at Mytholmroyd Community Centre on Saturday 20th March. Both events are open to all and tickets will be available soon!

Hebden Royd Town Council has reshaped its Christmas events programme for 2026.
Our new festive offer has families and community groups at its heart.

Instead of one major event in Mytholmroyd and Hebden Bridge, we’ll be hosting a separate Lights Switch On and a Santa’s Grotto on two different dates, in each town.

This will make for a more focused and relaxed experience with more opportunities to join in the festivities AND you can meet Santa much nearer to Christmas!
