Helmsley Walled Garden

Helmsley Walled Garden A historic walled garden & independent charity. Dog friendly. Café, shop & plant centre.
(276)

This inclusive space fosters social connection & exceptional horticultural practices to enhance the garden’s natural beauty. Built in 1759, Helmsley Walled Garden is a beautiful five acre garden sitting beneath the imposing ruins of Helmsley Castle. Originally providing the vegetables, fruit and flowers for the table of Duncombe Park until just after World War 1, it fell into dereliction after it

closed its doors for the final time in 1984. Restoration started in 1994 and since then the Garden has gone from strength to strength through the dedication and care of staff and volunteers. Attractions include restored glasshouses full of colour, double herbaceous borders, a brand new clematis garden showcasing over 150 different varieties. Fruit trees clothe the walls and the grounds, including a special collection of Yorkshire apple cultivars and vegetable plots provide some of the ingredients for the delicious dishes in the Vinehouse Café.

Hello and welcome back for another week of garden antics!

Since the weather is so changeable and the sunshine is not exactly dependable, we thought we'd brighten your day with a few recent outtakes.

We'd love to be able to explain these images, but sometimes even we can't make sense of what our volunteers get up to!

Happy Wednesday 😁

It's National Gardening Week!

The sun is shining and our garden volunteers are embracing the health, wellbeing, and environmental benefits of nurturing our beautiful garden.

National Gardening Week was launched by to encourage more people to get involved in gardening and to highlight it's wide-ranging benefits.

Whether you're a seasoned horticulturalist or a complete beginner, this week offers a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature and improve your gardening skills.

If you're not able to get involved in a practical way, then why not visit us and enjoy spending some time in a green space away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Bring a book, journal, or sketchbook, and switch off your phone. Take a break from the daily demands while you pause and take in the stunning colours and forms that nature has gifted us.

Happy Friday!

And what a beautiful start to the day!

We're open from 10am so come and visit us. It's the perfect day to enjoy the garden and take in all the striking spring colours, and maybe have a chat with our volunteers as they're working. Then head over to the Garden Shop and plant sale area. And don't forget to make time for a delicious lunch or coffee and cake (or perhaps both!)

Whatever you're up to, we wish you a lovely day 🌸🌿

🐔"Excuse me, but do you have any seed?"

You may have noticed that our flock has grown in size recently...and you'd be absolutely right! We've welcomed six new feathered friends to join the gang.

They're settling in beautifully! Enjoying the sunshine, exploring their surroundings and of course keeping a close eye out for snacks.

We think it's safe to say they're already feeling right at home. ☀️

🪾 We had a fantastic time at today's Willow Weaving Workshop here at the garden 🌱

Participants spent the morning crafting beautiful willow obelisks, perfect for supporting climbing plants while adding a handsome touch to the garden. It was wonderful to see everyone's creativity come to life!

We're excited to have our next group already getting started this afternoon for more weaving.

If you missed out, don't worry. Janice will be back later in the year with more workshops, including a Decorative Flower Willow Weaving session on Saturday 30th May 🌸

Please see our website for details!

Then why not come along and join us for a relaxed and inspiring pottery workshop in the stunning setting of the Orchid House?

The workshop is led by Rebecca Norris of and a former contestant on the Great Pottery Throwdown.

Following the workshop, your creations will be taken away to be fired, then returned to Helmsley Walled Garden for you to collect approximately 2 weeks later.

Rebecca's workshop will run from 10.30 am to 1 pm on Sunday, the 26th of April. The workshop fee also includes entry to the garden for the whole day.
