This inclusive space fosters social connection & exceptional horticultural practices to enhance the garden’s natural beauty. Built in 1759, Helmsley Walled Garden is a beautiful five acre garden sitting beneath the imposing ruins of Helmsley Castle. Originally providing the vegetables, fruit and flowers for the table of Duncombe Park until just after World War 1, it fell into dereliction after it closed its doors for the final time in 1984. Restoration started in 1994 and since then the Garden has gone from strength to strength through the dedication and care of staff and volunteers. Attractions include restored glasshouses full of colour, double herbaceous borders, a brand new clematis garden showcasing over 150 different varieties. Fruit trees clothe the walls and the grounds, including a special collection of Yorkshire apple cultivars and vegetable plots provide some of the ingredients for the delicious dishes in the Vinehouse Café.

Are you a fan of Whichford Pottery?

If so, then pay us a visit soon. We have just taken delivery of a stunning collection of terracotta plant pots.

Whichford pots have a 10 year frost proof gurantee and make beautiful gifts, especially when filled with treats for green fingered recipients. Or, you could always just treat yourself 😊

The Garden Shop is open 10am-4.45pm, Wednesday to Sunday.

Hello from us!

We hope you're having a great week so far!

After a busy summer we're enjoying a slightly slower pace. But that doesn't mean there's less activity here at the garden. Amongst many other tasks, our volunteers are busy harvesting seeds and packaging them ready to sell in the garden shop. We think you'll agree; a packet of seeds makes a lovely addition to a greetings card.

We also have a few upcoming events to look forward to, including our Autumn Apple Weekend at the end of the month.

Just look at this beautiful work from our weekend painting course with Clare Belbin!

It was great to meet such a lovely group of artists, who clearly enjoyed every moment of their creative time in the Orchid House. They should all be extremely proud of the quality of work they have produced on this 2 day course.

Helmsley Walled Garden is a source of inspiration to so many of our visitors and volunteers. So, on your next visit don't forget to stop and take in the sounds, textures and scents, maybe even bring along a sketchbook or journal to capture how it makes you feel.

The art of noticing...

That's what it's all about on this weekend's painting course with our resident artist, Clare Belbin. And, on a sunny day like this the Orchid House is the perfect place to capture the changing light.

Clare's students started by drawing with a stick, in their non-dominent hand. As you can imagine, this takes a lot of control away from the artist, and instead brings an element of fragility and naivety to their mark making. And, the results are just beautiful!

Clare will be running more drawing and painting workshops, here at the garden, next year. We'll let you know as soon as these are live on our website.

🌟🌟A new festive workshop has just gone live on our website🌟🌟

Kick-start the festive season, on Saturday the 14th November, by joining us in the Orchid House to create beautiful embossed metal decorations, using your kitchen recycling!

In this 2 hour workshop your teacher, established artist & maker, Sally Wright of Sally Wright, will demonstrate and guide you through the process of making sustainable decorations using everyday recycling and equipment from home. You will then have the skills to continue enjoying this mindful and satisfying craft throughout the seasons.

Apples, apples, and more apples!

Here's Chris, our Garden Manager, looking very happy to be showcasing our Plant Heritage collection of Yorkshire apples at Europom 2026, at RHS Garden Rosemoor in Devon this weekend. What a fabulous display! Well done Chris!
