Helmsley Walled Garden

Helmsley Walled Garden A historic walled garden & independent charity. Dog friendly. Café, shop & plant centre.

This inclusive space fosters social connection & exceptional horticultural practices to enhance the garden’s natural beauty. Built in 1759, Helmsley Walled Garden is a beautiful five acre garden sitting beneath the imposing ruins of Helmsley Castle. Originally providing the vegetables, fruit and flowers for the table of Duncombe Park until just after World War 1, it fell into dereliction after it

closed its doors for the final time in 1984. Restoration started in 1994 and since then the Garden has gone from strength to strength through the dedication and care of staff and volunteers. Attractions include restored glasshouses full of colour, double herbaceous borders, a brand new clematis garden showcasing over 150 different varieties. Fruit trees clothe the walls and the grounds, including a special collection of Yorkshire apple cultivars and vegetable plots provide some of the ingredients for the delicious dishes in the Vinehouse Café.

'Sculpture in the Garden'

We're delighted to announce a special summer exhibition featuring the work of the Yorkshire Sculptors Group, opening on Saturday, the 20th of June, and continuing until Saturday, the 5th of September.

The exhibition has been carefully curated to engage with the garden’s unique character and atmosphere. The garden’s ethos of encouraging contemplation, well-being, and an appreciation of nature aligns closely with themes that have inspired sculptors throughout history and continue to resonate in contemporary practice.

Visitors will discover sculptures thoughtfully positioned throughout the garden, creating a sympathetic and enriching dialogue between artwork and landscape. The installations are designed to enhance the garden’s calming spaces and therapeutic qualities while encouraging reflection, curiosity, and conversation.

'Sculpture in the Garden' is included with ticketed admission to Helmsley Walled Garden and is free for annual members, residents' pass holders, carers, and children under 16. Booking is not required. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome.

We encourage you to find a quiet corner, take some time for yourself, and allow Andrew’s words to carry you through the garden…

It's National Volunteer Week!

There's not a week that goes by when we're not appreciative of our amazing volunteers. But this week we'll shout it from the roof tops!

They're the ones who greet you with a warm welcome at the admissions kiosk, help and advise you in the garden shop, and keep the garden looking fabulous throughout the season, come rain or shine. Our volunteers will also be heavily involved in our new fundraising campaign (more on that soon!).

They're our past and our future and the garden is a testament to their ongoing commitment and passion for making a difference.

So, next time you're visiting perhaps you might want to stop for a chat and say thank you.

Happy National Volunteer Week!
