Queens Arms, Breage, Helston, TR13 9PD. 01326 564229 Please note that we do not meet during August. The Rotary Club of Helston received its Charter from Rotary International in 1957 and at that time had 28 founder members. Since then, the Club membership has risen to around 40 with new members joining from time to time. The Club is also involved with the larger area of Rotary District 1175, which comprises all the clubs in Devon and Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, along with the cities of Plymouth, Truro and Exeter plus the towns and hamlets nestling on the western edge of the granite uplands of Dartmoor - all fall within the Rotary district. District 1175 holds periodic District Council Meetings, an annual District Assembly, and an annual conference, usually at a seaside resort. All members can attend District meetings and the conference. Our Club is also a constituent of Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland; which has a Secretariat at Offices based in Alcester, Warwickshire. RIBI operates under its own Rules and Constitution, though under the overriding umbrella of Rotary International (RI) based in Evanston, Chicago USA.

One of the many advantages of being a Rotarian is that once you join a local club you are then a member of Rotary International and are entitled to visit any of the 36,552 clubs world-wide.
Our past club president Chris Knight and his wife Martine were recently made very welcome at a Rotary Club in New Orleans, and, as is customary, club pennants were exchanged.
Here's a photo of the President of the Rotary Club of New Orleans Riverbend, Donald Tatera on the left and Chris Knight.

After an advertising campaign lasting several months, with Twystery posters up all over Helston and surrounding villages, and posting on all the Helston Facebook groups, the event has finally taken place.
Helston Rotarian Mike Hales thought of the idea and with help from the other club members and especially Club President Tim Grattan Kane who sorted out the venue, it went ahead last Saturday.
Twystery was a success!!
A sell-out crowd enjoyed the first major performance in Helston of a new theatrical genre - the Twystery - which is a fun rendition of a murder mystery play in two parts. It was “A Wounded Pride “ by James Oliver, performed by the Carnon Downs Drama Group at the Old Cattle Market on Saturday September 19th.

The performances were presented by the Rotary Club of Helston in aid of the Children’s Hospice South-West and approximately £1,500 was raised for the hospice.

Patrons watched a 30-minute play in which one of the characters dies. After an interval of refreshments the play was performed a second time with extra scenes to explain the process and the identity of the killer.

But, having submitted their guesses as to the identity of the killer at half time, the audience was armed with a variety of musical instruments, which they used to stop the action and identify any differences in the second performance.

“It is a new type of theatrical evening devised in the west of Cornwall,” said Bruce Austen, the director, “and it is proving increasingly popular with families and individuals who like to join in the proceedings and have some fun.”
Local businesses supported the event with raffle prizes from Tesco, Wheal Dream, and The Countryman pub in Piece. The Cornish Oven kept the cast and volunteers supplied with pasties during the long day.
Helston Rotary Club meets at Queen's Arms in Breage every Thursday at 1800 for 1830.

Well, this has been around for a while, but on Saturday it is finally happening.
This is what it's all about....

This performance is an immersive experience. In the first half, you’ll watch a gripping 30-minute murder mystery. After a short interval, the game begins.

Musical instruments and casino chips are placed on each table.

The second half repeats the same performance, but with a twist; there are 20 subtle visual changes in costumes or props.

Spot a difference, signal with your instrument, and if you’re correct, you earn a chip. Incorrect guesses cost you one.

The competition is light-hearted but fiercely fun!

At the end of the evening, the murderer is revealed, and prizes are awarded to those who guessed correctly and to the table with the most chips.

"A Wounded Pride" is set in the grand mansion of Lord Albert Fulbourn during an elegant evening ball. When an unexpected guest is murdered, it falls to Lady Petra to unravel the truth in a tale of intrigue and suspense.

Tickets can now be obtained by calling 0333 666 3366 , from Helston Bookshop, or at the venue on the day.

Here's a letter which warms the heart, it makes me very proud to be a Rotarian, please read all of it...

First of all the plea for a donation which started the ball rolling...

Dear Members of the Rotary Club,
I am writing to request your support in funding an Apple iPad for my daughter, Ella Stonestreet, to enable her to use the communication app Grid. This device would provide her with a vital and effective way to communicate in her daily life.
Ella is a friendly 13-year-old with a joyful presence. She sustained a bifrontal brain injury at a young age. Despite extensive investigations, the underlying cause remains undetermined, resulting in severe expressive language impairment, including verbal dyspraxia and dysarthria, which render her non-verbal. She also has other complex needs.
Unfortunately, Ella does not currently meet the NHS criteria for a communication device, despite her clear ongoing need. NHS provision is limited by strict eligibility rules, slow processes, and a lack of flexibility to individual needs.
An iPad with Grid installed would act as Ella’s voice, enabling her to express her needs, thoughts, and feelings using symbols, words, or phrases. This would greatly reduce the frustration and anxiety caused by communication barriers and support her emotional wellbeing.
The impact of this support would extend far beyond basic communication. It would allow Ella to engage meaningfully with family, carers, and the wider community, helping to build relationships and reduce social isolation. It would also support her participation in learning, daily routines, and decision-making, promoting greater independence and confidence.
Importantly, the device would enhance her safety, enabling her to communicate if she is in pain, distressed, or needs help.
While specialist communication devices can be costly and are not accessible through NHS funding in this case, an Apple iPad with Grid provides a more affordable and highly effective alternative.
Your support would provide Ella with a practical solution that could have a lasting and meaningful impact on her quality of life.
Your consideration of this request is greatly appreciated. Supporting Ella would truly give her a voice and the chance for greater independence.

Yours faithfully,
Jenna Stonestreet
Mother of Ella Stonestreet

We subsequently gave them a donation of £500.

Dear Helston Rotary Club,

I wanted to take the time to share with you just how much your support has meant to Ella and our family.

For years, we asked for an AAC communication device for Ella, but we were repeatedly told that she “wasn’t ready”. For years SLT's underestimated her understanding, her ability to learn, and most importantly, her desire to communicate.

We always knew Ella had so much to say. She was never “not ready” — she simply needed the right way to express herself.

Your generosity has given Ella a voice and opened up opportunities that we always believed were possible.
In just five weeks of us and Curnow school consistently modelling the device with her, Ella has shown us exactly what we knew she could do. She has demonstrated amazing focus, curiosity, and a genuine excitement to communicate.

A small but incredibly powerful moment happened recently. I had dug out the paddling pool the night before, and the next morning at breakfast Ella independently used her device to communicate and asked for “swimming pool garden.”

To some people, this might seem like a simple phrase, but to us it was absolutely enormous. It was Ella sharing her thoughts, making a connection, and showing us that she understands and want expressing her wants and desires.

We are so incredibly proud of her, and we cannot thank you enough for helping make this possible. Your support has not just provided a piece of equipment — it has given Ella a greater sense of independence, confidence, and the ability to share her world with us.

This is only the beginning, and we are so excited to see where Ella’s communication journey takes her.

Thank you again for believing in Ella and helping give her the opportunity she deserves.
With heartfelt thanks,

Jenna & Alan Stonestreet

On Saturday a group of Rotarians from Helston Rotary Club assisted by other volunteers helped the South Kerrier Alliance with some weeding and cleaning of events square at Coronation Lake. This is to enable the effective painting of a large mural on the surface.
