Kevin from the Gatwick Greenspace Partnership: "First session of a new Tuesday group at Owlbeech Woods, Horsham. A spot of Bracken clearance & we even miraculously avoided the rain/hail/thunder and lightning!"

Dew pond oasis! In the recent heatwave, Assistant Ranger Callum Forster saw a great range of birds visiting the dew pond at Southerham Farm Nature Reserve near Lewes - Corn Buntings, Goldfinches, Meadow Pipit and Whitethroat.

Finding water in summer can be especially difficult on the Downs, where rain can disappear quickly through the chalk. Saucer-shaped dew ponds, originally created for livestock, can make lifesaving places for amphibians, insects and birds.

Wet, wet, wet! The Saturday Hit Squad after clearing Bracken in the rain to the constant sound of a Cuckoo at Old Lodge. Clearing Bracken allows native flora such as heather to receive sunlight to grow & offers an open structure needed by some breeding birds & rare invertebrates 📸 Dav Bridger

Abi Weeden, Head of Wilder Learning at Sussex Wildlife Trust, took a walk to our Gillham Wood reserve at dusk, armed with a bat detector after an excellent Bat Walk in Rye led by James Duncan.

Abi said "With what I'd learnt on the bat walk, I was quite confident Gillham Wood would be a perfect location to spot Pipistrelle bats, and I wasn't disappointed! I was further surprised how far the bats were detected outside of our initial sighting in the wood; they were swooping around the street lamps and hedging all along the road to the reserve, highlighting the importance of surrounding habitat to the woodland."

Today is . Saltmarshes create an important transition zone between sea & land. This rare & important habitat is found at only a few places in Sussex: mainly at the harbours of Rye, Chichester & Pagham & along the tidal reaches of the Rivers Rother, Cuckmere & Adur 📸 Barry Yates

This Bee Orchid was found in Bevendean, Brighton, by the Communities Team, after Brighton Permaculture Trust took action to plant fruit trees & stop mowing in the area. The Bee Orchid is a sneaky mimic - the flower’s velvety lip looks like a female bee, so males fly in to try to mate with it & end up pollinating the flower.
