🌱 No Independent Should Stand Alone

Standing as an independent councillor or candidate takes courage, commitment, and a deep belief in serving your community. But too often independents face that journey without the support structures political parties provide.

That’s why The Independent Network exists — to champion, strengthen, and support independent voices in local democracy.

We are building a national community where independent councillors and candidates can connect in a safe, supportive, and empowering space. A place to share experience, gain knowledge, and grow in confidence as leaders.

Through training, guidance, and peer support, we help independents develop the skills to campaign effectively, navigate council systems, and represent their communities with integrity.

Because when independents support each other, communities are stronger and democracy is healthier.

🚀 Our “Be a Councillor” programme starts on 7th March, designed to help aspiring and current and new independents gain the knowledge and confidence to step forward and serve their communities.

Wishing you good health, happiness and success through 2026!

We have lived and loved, shared joys and sadnesses, fought battles and elections in support of our communities - thank you!

Challenges ahead include two priorities for work.
1. Govt needs to support solar on roofs, not farmland, to stop global giants taking and industrialising our farmland and draining our British pockets with among the highest electricity charges in the world. You might want to support now with the public inquiry starting on 6th Jan in Lincoln Assembly Rooms. Www.cvsag.org

2. Keeping community voices and services, while councils are dissolving around us and new unitaries spread thinly over ever bigger areas.

There is plenty to be grateful for in our beautiful county and much to defend! I am immensely impressed and proud of our communities - thank you for all you do to make our homeland so special.

A few Fridays ago I gave an award for the best police animal at the police and crime awards for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight

Most people will know I’m a big animal lover especially dogs

This is Dexter and his handler …. I enjoyed this one

The island had so many winners pcso’s, neighboured police there was a lot of great people there

Financial settlements out now for our Councils.
Nationally, we at the Local Government Association, we asked for a significant and sustained increase in overall funding that reflects current and future costs and demands for services, in particular for adult social care, children’s social care, SEND, home to school transport, temporary accommodation, and funding to accommodate any increase in the National Living Wage.

We got £3.9bn increase in Core Spending Power (CSP) announced at the 2025/26 Provisional Local Government Finance Settlement (PLGFS), of which £2.2bn is on the expectation that Councils will raise their council tax by the fil amount allowed.

As one - offs, an additional £1bn for SEND, £1.1bn through the Extended Producer Responsibility, and an additional £233m for the Homelessness. Nothing explicit for living wage increases.

My County has an increase IF it takes the full 5% council tax rise, my District has a loss. Overall, in real terms, Shire Districts down by 2.2% £52m, Shire Counties up by 3.2% or £545m. Metropolitan areas up by 5.7%
