There have been posts recently about Herne Bay and how many people are feeling fed up with the lack of care that government (local and national) shows towards our community, businesses and infrastructure.

We will post on our thoughts during the week about what we're doing and how with your support we hope to see change for the better in Herne Bay.

Meanwhile, Kemi Badenoch writes well below about the toxic impact the big state is having on us as individuals. We pay more and more tax, but what for?

We can't defend our country properly, we have businesses being taxed out of existence, young people can't find jobs let alone afford to buy or rent homes suitable to raise families, yet it feels like our cherished countryside is being built over without any new infrastructure, energy and food costs are rising daily, our roads are full of potholes, we can't get GP appointments and we're being told how to live our lives to a ridiculous degree by the nanny state.

It's time for more local decision-making and less government. Local choice must be paramount. Not made in Westminster, Canterbury, Maidstone or wherever the unitary will be based and dictating to the people of Herne Bay.

Whether you agree with Kemi or not, if you are fed up with how things are, but are hopeful that we can still turn things around and make a difference, please read on.

The Conservatives on Canterbury City Council voted against the Lab/Lib Dem's draft Local Plan in its current form going to the Section 19 stage (consultation by a planning inspector to judge the plan’s legality and soundness) because:

1/ the plan is unsustainable and unsound - it seems the process of deciding where to place 23,000 new homes has become simply anywhere that’s politically expedient for the Labour and Lib Dem cabinet, resulting in a reliance on technically complicated sites and insufficient highways infrastructure.
There is a risk of challenge and as a result all the infrastructure we hoped for like coastal secondary schools, lower density housing estates, more affordable housing, more open space and greater protection for our precious landscapes, biodiversity and nature could now be at risk of removal or being watered down. There is also great concern that the weakness of this Local Plan may result in the planning inspector putting the University of Kent land and other sites back into the plan.

2/ The transport plan is speculative and untested It relies on a bus first strategy without having any buses or any plan for a new bus station in Canterbury.
It aims to grid lock Canterbury by taking out one lane of the ring road, spending £18m of taxpayers' money to expand the Wincheap Park & Ride, while closing and disposing of most city centre car parks.
It’s a plan that is against the car driver and particularly against lower paid workers needing to get into the centre of Canterbury. It's unclear how residents in the NE of the district will drive by car to the hospital.
In what is called “vision and validate”, this scheme is nonsensical as it does not address how the council makes up the significant loss in parking revenue as a result of closing car parks. Moreover, if the “vision” fails to address reducing congestion in Canterbury, then strategies like imposing a charge on cars coming into the city could be adopted during the next decade.

3/ After the recent Scrutiny Committee we are concerned that both Southeast Water and Southern Water don't have the capacity to provide drinking water and sewerage respectively for new housing developments. It's all very well saying legally they have to provide connections, but we do not believe that the resulting restriction on daily water consumption or greater reliance on sewage tankering are the right answers.

This draft Local Plan is infrastructure light.

4/ While the Lab/Lib Dem administration says it has listened to residents, we don't think it has. It's listened to some where it suits them. The proposed Beacon Road development being a case in point. There's been no listening. They haven't challenged the housing numbers, which aren't based on current population growth trends in the district.

5/ The Lab/Lib Dem administration claims this is a great Local Plan for rural areas. Who have they asked? It's certainly not the view of parishes surrounding Herne Bay who are having yet more unwanted housing forced on them, but without the much-needed investment in highways infrastructure on Island Road or in Hoath, Greenhill and Herne & Broomfield.

The veteran MP says the plans are 'full of holes'

A snapshot of my year as a councillor

Today marks one year since I was elected by the residents of Herne & Broomfield and while there is still much more to do, I’d like to take a moment to update you on some of the things I’ve been working on in that time. It has been a pleasure to meet with many residents, community groups and charities so far as well as work alongside the Parish Council on key projects.

On the door step last March, you told me the things that most needed change were:

1. The problem with litter and dog mess on the pavements and our green spaces
2. The 602 bus which being too unreliable and the reduced service not being enough for those needing to use the bus to get around
3. Speeding on some of the main roads through Herne & Broomfield.
4. Parking around School Lane, Seymour Close and Streetfield.

So far I have worked hard to address these issues and while I have not been able to solve them all yet, I believe we have made progress and I will keep going.

Updates

🗑️ I carried out a full bin audit in collaboration with residents and the Parish Council and submitted requests for new bins in the most problematic areas - these bins are starting to be put in place over the next couple of weeks and some are already there. I have also listened to residents and worked with the Parish Council to get new signage in Windmill Road and requested greater enforcement as a first step. Last month, I organised a community litter pick in Cherry Orchard and will be setting up regular sessions across the Parish.

🚎 Although bus services are within the remit of Kent County Council rather than Canterbury City Council, I have written to and met with Stagecoach representatives to discuss both the 602 route and the provision of bus services for newer developments like the Redrow. I will continue to press on this issue.

🚗 On speeding cars, I have set up a Community Speedwatch group to operate on the worst affected roads across Herne and Broomfield. We are still recruiting volunteers and are due to have our training in the coming weeks to get us up and running. Let me know if you’d like to volunteer!

🅿️ Parking, particularly around the school, has been an issue that has been ongoing for many years. I have raised a number of concerns with Canterbury City Council and requested greater enforcement to help tackle the issues and will be attending a meeting at the end of the month with the Parish Council, KCC colleagues and residents to discuss a way forward.

Day to day I have been supporting with a number of housing request enquires, holding the waste collection service to account where it falls short and representing residents the best I can in everything I do on the council, including pressing water companies on their solutions to supply and spill issues, reporting potholes to KCC and standing up for rural communities.

Thank you for putting your trust in me and I will continue to do my utmost to deliver on your priorities. Please get in touch if you’d like to speak with me about any ideas or concerns affecting you: [email protected]

Last night all councillors on Canterbury City Council voted to start a Community Governance Review to ask the residents of Herne Bay if they would like more of a say over how the town is run. Canterbury and Whitstable are being asked too.

This could be via a Town Council or some other mechanism once Canterbury City Council is abolished and an East Kent Unitary takes over in May 2028.

This is the biggest shake-up in how local government is run in 50 years. And it's important that Herne Bay is not the only town in the new unitary left out from opportunities including: being able to raise funding and investment; being a statutory consultee for planning applications affecting the town; being involved in highways plans, and having a more powerful voice.

We believe the people of Herne Bay should not be left out when the unitary takes over in 2028!

More information on the process will be available in the coming months with a major consultation in May asking for your views.

We believe Herne Bay should be run by Herne Bay for Herne Bay!

Great to see enforcement officers have taken action against a flytipper on Little Charles Street in January.

I get so many complaints from people about the Inconsiderate dumping of rubbish in the town centre. It looks awful and doesn't reflect the civic pride that the majority of us have in Herne Bay.

Hopefully, this demonstrates that enforcement officers are about and they will take action. And that if you report to the council, action will be taken.

If you see any flytipping on public spaces please report it here - https://www.canterbury.gov.uk/environmental-problems/report-flytipping -

Report flytipping to us using our online form.
