A grade II* listed beauty
There's a building on Bell Lane in Hertford that one historian called "the finest building in Hertford." Most people rarely notice it 😃
Bayley Hall sits quietly off Fore Street, tucked down a lane that has been known over the centuries as Cow Lane, One Bell Street and Bayliehall Street.
It appears on maps as far back as 1611 and has been there in one form or another since at least 1621 according to Historic England.
A splendid early Georgian house in red and grey brick, its facade framed by giant pilasters and a fine Tuscan doorcase. Grade II* listed. One of Hertford's finest buildings.
And yet most people drive straight past it on Gascoyne Way without a second glance. As one writer put it — Bayley Hall turns its back on the town, and the town repays the compliment.
It didn't help that when Gascoyne Way was built in the 1960s, the grounds disappeared under the tarmac — leaving the only access along Bell Lane from Fore Street.
Over the centuries it has been home to a Mayor of Hertford, the headmaster of Hertford Grammar School (Richard Hale) — where Biggles author W.E. Johns was a pupil — and various things over the years.
But here's the detail that really caught my attention. And I know many will be waiting for me to include this detail 👀
Deep in the basement, there is said to be a passage — now blocked — that once led directly to Hertford Castle .. Now .. Whether it reaches the castle or simply runs under Bell Lane, nobody seems entirely sure. But that’s the story.
A hidden passage. A forgotten Georgian mansion. Hiding in plain sight off Fore Street.
Hertford. The stories really are everywhere. And sooooo worth keeping alive 😃❤️👍
