Another fantastic work party on Saturday with 15 volunteers new and old joining forces to tackle some of the trickier tasks in the nature reserve.

Whilst veteran volunteer John was digging out a metal stump causing a tripping hazard in the tennis court woods, new volunteer Paul got stuck in with the brambles. Mac and Stephen kept themselves so busy desilting the pond inlet that an informal search party set out to make sure they were OK. Kat (and Pip the dog) tidied up some of the paths in the depths of the woodland, whilst Trish, Mary, Hilary and Janet identified potential places for glades - spaces in the woodland where we can maximise light to increase the range of plants growing on the forest floor. Many hands made light work of the brambles around the small meadow and we even had time to plan ahead for the next couple of work parties!

So if you fancy trying your hand at path reinforcements, digging out surplus sycamores, trimming branches or brambles, or even cleaning the noticeboards and picnic benches, come and join us on 12 June - 10am at Stubbins Lane gate.

Do you have a passion for ponds? Are you batty about bats, interested in insects, or an authority on ants? Have you got a masters in meadows or a fixation on fungi?

Do you fancy sharing your knowledge with others?

We want to organise a couple of opportunities for people to learn about the nature and wildlife in our park and are looking for local speakers to share their knowledge.

Please get in touch if this is something you'd be interested in - we'd love to work with you!

Have any recent younger visitors to the Nature Reserve lost a welly?

It's currently propped up on the wall near the noticeboard and gate at the top of the Nature Reserve.

Happy to take it inside for safekeeping if you can't get it soon.

Has anyone else spotted that even when it's meant to be a rainy morning, or even if it's generally grey and gloomy, that the sun always seems to come out for our monthly work parties?

Rain wouldn't put off our intrepid volunteers, but it does make the work parties more enjoyable. A couple of hours spent in nature and sunshine*, joining a community activity with a friendly bunch of people really does wonders for your mental health. Highly recommended. Come and join us on the second Saturday of the month from 10am at the Stubbins Lane gate.

This month an outstanding octet of wonderful workers were banishing brambles, ripping out raspberries, deadheading daffodils, splitting snowdrops, speculating on signage and designating dog-poo-bag-dispenser locations.

We also took time to explore progress of our previous endeavours. We were delighted to see so many of the trees and shrubs we planted last year starting to flourish, and enjoyed the increasing breadth of woodland plants starting to flower.

Thanks to all who joined us today - and special thanks to Mac and Mary for hosting us for coffee and biscuits - a welcome break after our hard labours

*please note that sunshine cannot be guaranteed, though the nature and friendly company are assured

Another glorious day for the monthly work party! The sun brought out a group of 12 wonderful volunteers who got to work installing ground guards and cutting back bracken so the meadow can flourish. A huge thanks to all the volunteers, and an extra thanks to Mac and Mary for putting on the post-work party refreshments!

Fancy joining our merry gang? We're a friendly, welcoming bunch and the next party will be Saturday 11 April - meet at 10am at Stubbins Lane Gate.

On Saturday the sun broke through the seemingly everlasting grey clouds bringing blue skies to the Nature Reserve - a perfect day to wander around, carry out some essential tasks and plan the year ahead.

The newly elected committee were all present and correct with Mike and Kat staying on as Chair and Treasurer, Olly stepping up to be Deputy Chair, Mary volunteering as Secretary and Pauline and Andy sharing the role of Work Party Organisers. Trish will be helping out with Comms, Marketing and Baking duties.

Next FoCP work party is Saturday 14 March - come and join us at 10am at the Stubbins Lane gate. We're a friendly and welcoming bunch - no experience needed.

The following photos show you the new brightly coloured pond information sheet organised by Manda and Kat. We believe this printing will resist fading much longer than before. Thank you for the research, Manda 🙂 Here you can see the nature reserve pond in all its glory, cleared off suffocating w**d and roots and ready for spring. Well done FoCP Team standing at the edge of the pond!!! Other members were nearby or slaving over a hot stove - see the Christmas gingerbread cookies! Yummy 😋 and, of course, the reward of a nice cup of tea......
Best wishes to all from the FoCP Team and thanks to Chinley Buxworth Brownside Parish Clerk and Parish Council for all their support 🙂

In our first photo you see the nature reserve pond clogged with excess vegetation and an over abundance of reed mace. It took a lot of hard work dislodging the roots of the reed mace which has to be prevented from taking over the pond. Most of the removal of vegetation was done from the pond sides to minimise disrupting the pond bed. All sorts of tools were used including a long handled paint roller. Great work everyone!

December Work Party 2025

We had a fine winter's day for our final work party of the year. Many thanks to the 9 volunteers - Ann, Janet, Mac, Mary, Mike, Olly, Pauline, Stephen and Angela who toiled away clearing the nature reserve pond of excess vegetation and planted wood anemone and celandines in the clearing near the entrance to the small meadow.
Thanks Olly and Trish for hosting another post work party get-together with freshly cooked ginger biscuits and billionaire shortbread, tea and coffee. It's been a wonderful year of team work looking after our Local Nature Reserve for the community.

Hope to see you at the first gathering of the Friends of Chinley Park Nature Reserve in the New Year.

This will take place on the second Saturday of February - February 14th 2026.

🎄 Wishing all our volunteers & supporters 🎄

⛄a Very Happy Christmas & New Year ⛄

🌳FoCP Nature Reserve's Tree &Bulb Planting Party 🌳

28 November 2025

Many thanks to the Friends of Chinley Park Team who over the last few months made yesterday's tree and bulb planting a success.
A fair amount of organisation was involved - ordering the saplings and bulbs, preparing the planting sites and making a map with key, sorting the plants and then on a day when the weather was sympathetic to our efforts - that is there were no downpours or snow showers - a concentrated effort planting a selection of hedgerow plants - dog wood, dog rose, hazel, hawthorn etc and small saplings - silver birch, rowan and cherry and many bluebell bulbs. All native plants.
It was great to welcome Ann from Buxworth who joined us for the morning. Many thanks to Andy and Pauline for collecting, cleaning and returning the tools and to Mary and Mac for hosting refreshments post work party.

🌳A fun and productive time was had by all🌳
