Calling Buckinghamshire Creatives: Join Our By Hook or By Book Team!

Following the launch of By Hook or By Book, Buckinghamshire Libraries' exciting new reading and cultural engagement programme funded by The National Lottery Fund, we're delighted to announce two paid residency opportunities for local creatives.

As part of a year-long programme celebrating reading, storytelling and culture through the theme of mystery and crime, we're looking for a Writer in Residence and a Portrait Artist in Residence to help bring the project to life in libraries across Buckinghamshire.

The deadline for applications is on Friday 14 August 2026.

Our Read 6 in 2026 is a reading challenge just for adults, where you can read a book for each of our themes and enter a prize draw once you’ve ticked each title off your list.

Join children’s author Monica Sood for a series of engaging and interactive free storytelling workshops inspired by her latest picture book, The Gift That Gives Back. Through storytelling, discussion, colouring, and creative craft activities, children will be encouraged to explore courage, kindness, and the small actions we can all take to care for the world around us.

We’re excited to be going all in for the with the The Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge 2026! Children can now sign up for Read to the Beat! at their local library or online and enjoy fantastic books, activities, and rewards throughout the holidays.

It’s easy to get involved:

- Head down to your local library and sign up with your child’s library card.

- Pick up your starter pack complete with a sticker booklet and Storytime magazine and set your reading goal.

- Start reading! 6 books or more - if you love it, read it.

Once your child reads 6 or more books, the Summer Reading Challenge is complete. But why stop there? After picking up their Completers certificate and medal, you can keep the fun going this summer and Read to the Beat!

Visit Buckingham Library on Saturday 1 August for a brand-new adaptation of Shakespeare’s iconic comedy, ‘Twelfth Night’, as you’ve never seen it before! This new take on the classic play is produced by Queens Park Arts Centre's award-winning in-house storytelling company, Unbound Theatre , and suited for anyone 7 years or older.

The show will run from 2:30pm to 5pm and tickets for this event are free, so be sure to visit the Event link in our comments to secure your spot today.

Celebrate the National Year of Reading with the WhizzFizz Children’s Art Competition! Unleash your inner artist and get creative. Entries for the competition can be a drawing, painting or collage - inspired by a story you love.

Entry Guidelines:
- Maximum size A3 (29cm x 42cm).
- Open to children aged 15 and under

Award categories:
- 6 years and under
- 7 to 11 years
- 12 to 15 years

Each age category will have a winner and a runner‑up, with prizes awarded in every category.

Hand in your artwork to any Buckinghamshire Library before 1 August 2026.

Winners will be notified by Saturday 15 August 2026, with the Exhibition Opening on Saturday 22 August 2026.
