Labour is investing nearly £10 billion to build genuinely affordable homes where they’re needed most. In Wycombe, several sectors of our community need new affordable housing to fill a housing gap. Seeing this through is aspirational, practical and beneficial for our town.

Labour is funding more than 70,000 new homes across England, putting councils at the heart of house building and helping more families find a safe, secure home. Wycombe has a shortage of homes. This building programme will ease problems for many local families.

Labour is helping farmers through this and future dry summers with a £65 million support package. Farmers are custodians of our environment and provide a vital service to support our national food security. This support from the government is important for everyone, not just the farmers. High Wycombe is in a rural setting, and we should be thinking of our neighbours, the farmers, at this difficult time.

This Labour Government is taking action on the cost of living and dealing with problems that make everyday life harder. In High Wycombe we are fortunate to also have a great MP, Emma Reynolds for Wycombe. With Labour improving the odds and a great local MP, we have a lot of good reasons to be hopeful for a great future.

Labour is giving people a little breathing space by introducing savings while working to reduce the cost of living. This year's economic growth is bringing back hope through a stronger, more resilient economy.

Buckinghamshire Labour councillors Chris Chilton for Terriers and Amersham Hill, Councillor Hazel Arthur-Hewitt for Downley and Cllr Majid Hussain respond to the Buckinghamshire Local Plan. The Plan is currently out for consultation.

The draft Local Plan is a positive step forward. It gives Buckinghamshire a long-overdue planning framework and meets housing targets without building on Green Belt land. However, some significant concerns need to be addressed.

The delivery appears to be pushed back into later years. Affordable housing falls far short of what is needed. There is also no clear plan for the infrastructure needed to support thousands of new homes.

There is a shortage of secondary school places in the town. The plan foresees major developments in areas such as Gomm Valley, Hazlemere, Widmer End and Princes Risborough. However, Downley pupils are already being sent to these places because of the lack of local schools.

The draft Local Plan sees parking standards for town centre developments reduced to just 0.5 spaces per bedroom. At the same time, High Wycombe is also set to lose three major car parks near the train station to residential development. There appears to be no clear proposals for replacement parking.

Overall, this is a plan that should be supported. However, we also want to see a strong commitment to improve affordable housing, school provision, infrastructure and local regeneration.

The work done by social care staff is “something to be proud of”. But the system itself is broken. Long hospital overstays are often a system outcome. That costs the NHS £billions. Social care in the UK, in Wycombe too, needs substantial change. Andy Burnham says, “I believe that broken social care is the biggest cause of corridor care in the NHS.”
Labour is to fix that problem.
