A Morning That Reminded Us What Really Matters - Community Project Broxbourne Nursing Home
Today, I had the privilege of taking 15 wonderful students to Broxbourne Nursing Home, where they spent the morning working alongside residents in the community garden. Together, they planted a variety of flowers, plants and shrubs, helping to bring new colour and life to the outdoor spaces. They also shared singing talents and dancing, which brought smiles and laughter to everyone involved.
I was immensely proud of every single student. They represented our school beautifully, demonstrating compassion, respect, maturity and enthusiasm throughout the visit. They did not simply give up their time; they gave something far more valuable — their attention, their kindness and their willingness to connect with others.
Perhaps the most powerful moments were the simplest ones: a student sitting and chatting with a resident, listening intently, laughing together and making someone feel valued. As we often discover on these visits, the rewards are shared by everyone involved. There they were, all 15 of them, forming genuine connections with the residents and demonstrating how much a simple conversation or act of kindness can mean.
The wonderful comments we receive from residents' families mean so much. They regularly tell us what a wonderful thing it is for our students to give up their time to visit their loved ones, and how much those moments of conversation, laughter and companionship are appreciated. As one of them said today “It is truly a remarkable community project, bringing joy, connection and a sense of belonging to everyone involved”.
So, today, our students reminded us that kindness is one of the most important lessons we can teach — and they taught it beautifully.
