Many types of Radars were tried and tested at this site, one of which was installed on top of a 200ft steel mast, untill the fateful night of the 15th of January, 1945, when a British Lancaster bomber mysteriously collided with the mast on return from a bombing raid over Germany, the plane crashing onto the Heath, tail blocking the site entrance. The crew all died as a result of the crash. After t
he collision, only one radar was listed as operational on the site untill 1953 when the site conducted experiments with the prototype of the Decca Type 80 radar under the code name "Green Garlic". Today, the remains of RAF Bard Hill hide deep within the gorse of Salthouse Heath, hidden from view at the roadside. The original access road still remains, leading up to the site where 2 structures still stand either side of the 4 concrete bases of the 200ft Radar mast.
