On a good day this is clearly visible from the seafront at Hornsea and many people must have wondered what it is.
It is in fact the seawater inlet/outlet which was used in the excavation of the underground gas caverns at Aldbrough.
This photograph was taken in 2006 from the site of the Ringborough gun battery on the cliffs above it.

This photograph is of "Burnside" on Eastgate.
Originally a private house, and now converted into flats.
This was the property in which Winston Churchill stayed overnight whilst he was visiting the area in 1941, having flown into Catfoss airfield.
At this time it was owned by Colonel and Mrs Wellstead.

We don't have a date for this photograph of the Wrygarth Inn at Great Hatfield, but it is certainly an early one and the building is much changed since then.
Unfortunately, although the building is still there, it has been closed now for some time, and is now a private residence.

Many of you will remember the Wakefield Seaside School on Hull Road. This photograph dates from April of 2007.
The school was opened in 1938 by the then Wakefield City Council with the intention of providing healthy education at the seaside during the summers for some of the disadvantaged children of their area.
The school was used by some of the Free French Army during WW2 before re-opening as a school after the war.
The school closed altogether in 2011, and was eventually sold and demolished.
A Care Home and some housing now occupy the site.

This page was started for the Hornsea and District Civic Society in December of 2012 and has been run continuously since then.
The number of followers has grown steadily over the years, and we are now within sight of reaching 6,000 followers. We only need 60 more to reach this target, and it would be nice to reach this in our 60th year of operation as a society.
We ask that if you are viewing this page, you actually become a follower, so that you receive all post notifications, and that you ask your friends and relatives to follow us too.

This was a familiar enough sight back in 2003 when this photograph was taken, with Kemp's shops on the left behind which the post office obviously had a substantial slope backwards when compared to the other buildings.

The bungalows on the extreme left and right of the photo were very near to the cliff edge even then.

This is quite an old photograph of The Round House on Seaton Road.
All the members of the family seem to be in front of the house and it looks like the 2 ladies are seated at a table.

This unusual photograph of Kirkholme Point at The Mere dates from 2021 and was a drone photo taken by Archie Mond.
It clearly shows how shallow parts of the water are, particularly to the right of the point and to the left of the boat landings
