Bad weather can lead to ground movement which can expose spent ammunition along our local coastline (especially beaches near Cowden and Mappleton).

Rockets, bullets and mortar bombs have all been recovered over the last decade, having been fired into the cliffs by RAF aircraft during the war.
Although many of these devices are found to be practice rounds used largely for bombing practice until the 1970’s, they can contain explosive detonators, which can case injury.

These odd items of explosives often turn up from time to time, after being embedded in the cliffs, and are common finds, but any sighting should be reported to the Coastguard and left alone.

We will work with the team of specialist engineers, who are dealing with the unexploded ordnance on a daily basis. They are carrying out frequent planned demolitions to help alleviate the problem.

Call 999 and ask for the coastguard if you get in trouble. We’ll send help 24/7.

The beach can be a fun place for everyone, but there are still potential dangers to be aware of and some things to consider.

Top tips for staying safe on the beach:

Tip 1 - Choose a lifeguarded beach.
Check in advance if the beach you're visiting has a lifeguard.

Tip 2 - Check local signs and flags for risks.
Be aware of dangers and sea conditions.

Tip 3 - Know your location.
If you're not familiar with the area make sure you note down the beach name and address.
Other details such as landmarks are also useful to help us find you.

Tip 4 - Remember Float to Live.
If you find yourself in trouble in the water, relax and float with your head back and your ears submerged

Tip 5 - Look after each other.
Keep a close eye on children and never let them swim alone. Go with others when exploring.

Cliff Saftey is very important.

Please be aware that cliffs can be more unstable than they look, especially after bad weather and changing conditions, with the potential to crumble and collapse at any moment.
Always stand well back from cliff edges and bases, because if rocks fall then it could cause a fatal accident.

Some helpful Safety Advice:

- Do not attempt to climb up or down cliffs, unless you are properly equipped and trained to do so.

- Make sure that you are properly equipped for walking along coastal paths, and remember to wear sturdy shoes or boots.

- Only use the designated paths and take notice of any warning signs and fences in place, be responsible and don’t take any unnecessary risks.

- Keep your dog on a lead near cliffs, if they pick up the scent of an animal or hear something on the coast below it doesn’t take much for them to follow their nose.

- Stay away from the bottom of cliffs. When standing at the bottom of a cliff, you shouldn’t stand less than the height of the cliff, away from its base.

Why do the HM Coastguard and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) get mixed up?

It’s probably because the HM Coastguard and the RNLI are both search and rescue organisations, and we work very closely together during emergencies at sea and on the coast.
People often mistake us for being the same organisation but, actually, we have distinct and separate roles.

Us blue-suited Coastguards are trained volunteers enrolled with HM Coastguard, and we are more than 3,000 strong nationwide.
We have capability for first aid, water rescues close inshore, missing person searches, and mud and cliff operations in some areas.

Emergency calls are directed to one of HM Coastguard’s, and they will task the most appropriate resources from an official list of trusted organisations – each known as a ‘declared facility’.
These include independent lifeboat organisations, volunteer life brigades and inshore rescue services, the National Coastwatch Institution, and the Sea Safety Group.

In 2015 HM Coastguard took over from Royal Air Force and Royal Navy to deliver the UK’s search and rescue helicopter service.

These famous red and white helicopters (rescue 912) are responsible for all civilian search and rescue incidents in the UK, and operate from 10 strategically located bases.

They are regularly called out to incidents on the water and along the coast, as well as to help with inland rescues where a helicopter is needed, such as mountain rescues.

The UK Helicopter bases are:
- Stornoway Airport
- Sumburgh Airport
- Prestwick
- Inverness Airport
- Caernarfon Airport
- Humberside Airport
- St Athan
- Lydd, Kent
- Newquay Airport
- Lee-on-Solent

Planning a trip to the coast this weekend?
Winter at the coast can be beautiful, but it can be unpredictable and dangerous.

Here are some key safety tips:

• Check the weather forecast for high winds, rain or even snow.

• Be cautious on wet or icy surfaces on coastal paths which can become slippery.
Watch your step and wear sturdy footwear.

• Stay away from cliff edges and bases. Cliffs can be more unstable than they look.
Cliff falls or landslides happen without warning.

• Allow time to get back safely before nightfall. Take a torch with you for extra visibility.

Call 999 and ask for the coastguard if you get in trouble. We’ll send help 24/7.

Always check the tide times….

Did you know that while 74% of people admit they think they “should” check tide times when heading to the coast, only 35% claimed they “actually did” on their last visit?

HM Coastguards around the UK have been called to over 2,000 incidents of people being cut off by the tide in the last three years.

Stay safe. Always check the tide times before your visit and explore as the tide is going out, making sure you have time to get back as it comes in, remind yourself where all the exit points from the beach are in case you need them.
Tell someone where you are going and what time you’ll be back, especially if you're going alone.

If you get trapped by the tide, try to find a safe location and Call 999, ask for the Coastguard. We’ll send help 24/7.
