It took Britain around 70 years to industrialise its economy. The Victorians understood that it would be a slow process, requiring huge infrastructure change and vast amounts of investment.

So why does Labour think decarbonising the entire economy can be done in 25 years, with so little regard for the risk of bankrupting the country and forcing households into spiralling debt to pay for it?

It is a very good question — and one they cannot answer.

Labour's wreckless borrowing is now costing us £3,500 a second in interest payments.....

We have a strategy to find massive savings on public spending, starting with £50bn from the welfare budget.

50% will go to reducing the £3 trillion national debt. 50% in tax cuts to stimulate growth.

That sounds like a plan built around how to run an economy for the future — not one designed to reward voters within a single Parliament in the hope of clinging on to power.

Quite right. The weird irony is that if we all had an electric car tomrorrow the lights would go out, as we need the equivalent of an extra 4 nuclear power stations to cope with demand and that doesn't include the ones being built. Even then it leaves us at 100% capacity, so really we would need 5 to allow for demand surges on cold January evenings.

On the basis they wont be built for at least 50 years, likely longer (none are yet commissioned - no sites even selected), what's the hurry to get us all in an EV by 2030? We can't produce even 20% of the electricity required.

Plus we don't have the capabilty to get the power into the cars even if we did, there are 30m cars on the road and only 119k EV chargers.

As usual, Labour appear to be announcing the destination before they have worked out the route — or the maths needed to get there.

It is really interesting that in Mr Milliband making electricity so expensive in his thirst to do net zero in 5 minutes, he has torpedoed public demand for electric cars and air source heat pumps, his demands for us all to buy them are falling on deaf ears.

There is only so much people will pay to be green and EVs and ASHPs were expensive to buy anyway, but now they are also insanely expensive to run as well.

An extension on Claire's point, as with the recycling revolution 20 years ago, if you want people to embrace anything, it has to be easy, free or very cheap. Cost dictates public behaviour. I think Mr Milliband thought he could simply tell us all what to do and we would do as we were told. Not quite a communist state yet Edward in spite of your best efforts!

It's utter madness not to drill in the North Sea, increasing the cost of utilities to British families.

Especially when that £540 is then given to countries like Norway to import the same gas they have drilled from the same beds in the North sea. We are going to burn the carbon one way or another, its just a case of who digs it up, and clearly delusional Labour thinks its better to pay someone else to do the dirty work, so they can claim at gala dinners we are no longer a polluter.

Even if the whole UK economy became completely carbon free tomorrow, it would still account for less than 1% of what is required globally and we are paying a heavy price for trying to get there so quickly when our emissions are quite low anyway.

It took 70 years to industrialise our economy, it will take longer to decarbonise it. Making British families pay to try and do it in 25 years to create legacies for politicans is completely irresponsible.

I'm not sure what explanation can be offered to justify a migrant family arriving in the country and immediately getting social housing at the cost of a British family who have been waiting for months or even years on the waiting list.

Perhaps that's why Labour haven't offered one.

1m 35s of basic economics for anyone who wants to know how to get the UK economy firing once more.

A £ spent by consumers has about 3x more impact on GDP than a pound spent in tax collected, according to the IMF.

It really isn't that complicated - let people and businesses keep their cash so they spend it!
