Struggling with the cost of school meals? Help is available.

If you receive certain benefits or you are finding things difficult financially, your child may be eligible for free school meals - and it’s quick and easy to check.

✅ Children in government funded schools in Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 automatically qualify
✅ Older children may also be eligible if you receive benefits like Universal Credit, Income Support, or Child Tax Credit
✅ Even if you don’t qualify for most benefits, your child might still be eligible - speak to your school or local authority to find out more

Eligible families may also receive extra support through the Government's Holiday Activities and Food Programme, or the Crisis and Resilience Fund: https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/leisure-recreation-and-community/crisis-and-resilience-fund/

Are you recycling responsibly? ♻️

Horsham District Council are reminding people how important it is to dispose of unwanted items correctly after a waste collection vehicle recently experienced a fire.

❗️Items such as household batteries and vapes cannot be disposed of with your general household waste.

Instead, you can:
✅Use the council's free battery recycling service
✅Book a free small electricals collection for devices like mobile phones, e-cigarettes and laptops

Visit HDC's website for more information: https://www.horsham.gov.uk/waste-recycling-and-bins/household-bin-collections/recycling-bin

We are again urging residents to recycle responsibly following a recent fire in one of our waste collection vehicles. West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service were called to deal with the fire that started in one of our waste vehicles in Kilnwood Vale. Thanks to the quick thinking crew, damage to the vehicle was prevented, but they were forced to empty the contents onto the road. A grab lorry was later sent out to clear away the waste.

Items such as household batteries, vapes, string lights and laptop batteries cannot be collected alongside household waste. Collection lorries have compaction equipment which can easily crush these items, causing them to ignite and set fire to other collected materials.

For more information about what can and cannot be recycled as part of kerbside collections, and how to dispose safely of other items, please visit the Council website, the link is in our bio.

With the return to school drawing closer, the thought of buying new school uniforms can feel daunting.

If you're struggling financially, many schools offer ‘pre-loved’ uniform items, so it’s worth checking with them what's available.

You can also reach out to us at [email protected]. We can direct you to Ten Little Toes. for support or we may be able to take some pressure off with our Financial Support Fund.

Please be assured, all enquiries will be treated sensitively and confidentially. 💙

The recent spell of hot, dry weather means the risk of home fires and wildfires has increased.

We can all do our bit to help protect people, wildlife and our communities. This includes:

- Checking smoke alarms are working
- Disposing of BBQs safely
- Being mindful of wildfire risks
- Watching out for sunlight fires
- Not lighting bonfires
- Knowing what to do if you discover a fire

Please take a few minutes to read our latest fire safety advice and find out how you can help stop fires before they start:

🌘 Planning to watch the solar eclipse this evening? Make sure you do it safely...

Today's solar eclipse is anticipated to be a spectacular sight across the UK.

It's important to remember that looking at the sun without proper protection can cause permanent damage to your eyesight. Here's how you can enjoy the experience safely:

✅Only use certified solar eclipse glasses that meet safety standards. Regular sunglasses, even if they're tinted, are not safe for viewing the sun.

✅Never look directly at the sun without appropriate eye protection, even when most of it appears to be covered by the Moon.

✅If you don't have eclipse glasses, use a safe indirect viewing method such as a pinhole projector. You can find a number of creative ways to do this using household items on the BBC website: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4gdxyjnz3do

For more information about the eclipse, including when and where to see it, visit the BBC's eclipse coverage and guidance: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/resources/idt-2a268141-80ca-480d-bd04-6cf688bcc3dd

Beware of no win, no fee claims

No win, no fee companies have been cold calling customers, asking them to sign contracts on the doorstep. This is illegal. If someone visits claiming to be from housing or surveying, check their ID before letting them in.

If they say they can get you compensation, please be cautious. You could get tied into an unfair contract and end up owing money.

Instead, book repairs by emailing [email protected]. If you have an issue you don’t think we’ve dealt with properly, use the same email to make a complaint. You can also get advice any time by contacting www.housing-ombudsman.org.uk.
