💧 Picture a teenager standing at the edge of a river in June.

It is a hot day. Friends around them. Nobody watching.
They can swim. They've had lessons. There might even be a badge at home somewhere.

They jump.
Cold water shock hits the moment they break the surface. An involuntary gasp. Rapid, uncontrolled breathing. Panic overriding everything their body was ever trained to do — in a warm pool, with a teacher watching, knowing exactly where the wall was.
This is not a hypothetical.

At least eleven people died in UK open water during a single week this May. Nine of them children and teenagers (data from 30th May). The RLSS has confirmed that when air temperatures hit 25°C, accidental drowning risk is five times higher — and that teenagers and young adults are the most at risk.
Many of them could swim.

They did not have Water Wisdom.

The Sussex Swim School is starting pay as you go sessions in June and July for teens (from 14 years ) to improve their swimming, learn about cold water shock and how to deal with it - get safer for Summer !
