Wirral Hedgehog Rescue

Wirral Hedgehog Rescue Wirral Hedgehog Rescue - small, home based, self and donations funded rescue - caring for hedgehogs in need. Always needing newspapers!!

Our little Hedgehog Rescue is home based in Moreton and we have limited, but luxury, accommodation available for poorly and overwintering hedgehogs and for babies. The former Pawprints, now known as Wirral Fox Rescue, can be reached via the page of that name.

Helen has gone home tonight after 4 months of TLC at the Hedgehog Hotel. When she arrived she was cold and underweight - it was snowy weather and she was too small to withstand it - plus she had a variety of ailments which have now all been sorted.

At just under 1Kg and fully fit, it was time for her to go and off she has toddled into what we hope is a great hedgehog life - she has been an absolute cutie to care for and i wish her well.

The last few years have been so crammed with "life" that there has hardly been a minute to update you. There have been happy hatches, a couple of matches and some sad despatches, alongside a full on full time employment, managing my ferret rescue and caring for 2 senior humans.

Something had to give and it is with huge sadness that it has to be the hedgehog rescue. Already I am getting daily calls about poorly hogs and I am being honest and saying, not this year.

2025 promises to be just as full on as last year and at a time when poorly hedgehogs are about to start arriving I am gearing up for the once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of my granddaughters new life alongside continuing to work.

All hedgehog gear.....and there's a lot of it, is carefully stored away to emerge when life is less full on or when I have a new location for our prickly friends. They need and deserve lot of care and time and space and funds and right now I am out of all of these.

It's very sad and a tough decision to make but I can't do this properly right now so am taking a break.

The ferret rescue continues and is currently running at 23 which is a challenge on its own.

We will be back and I am always happy to advise but I cannot take any poorly hogs this year. My remaining overwintering hogs will be released this week and we will wait and see how the year progresses before making a decision about overwintering later on.

With huge thanks for all the help to date. Nothing has gone to waste and 40 plus hedgehogs have been returned to full health and released thanks to you.

PS please don't stop those newspapers coming as we get through so many with all the ferrets.

We will be back!
Jo and the hedgehogs.

Hedgehogs!! So now it's getting warmer - although cooler weather is also forecast, time to do bedroom refurbs again - actually it's a full clear out weekly unless hibernating - and guess what - Starling has finally decided to go into hibernation just when everyone else is waking up.

So - here is a photo of Dave who came in with Starling, weighing 300g in November - too small to cope with winter. Today he is a fine 1074g and definitely ready to go - but his chum is having a big sleep so they may not be released together.

I will keep you updated on the releases once I have checked out a couple of new gardens and also depending on the weather......watch this space and enjoy this chunky, healthy and raring to go boy!

I don't say it enough but THANK YOU to the many people who are so supportive and continue to drop off newspapers, dog food, cat food, blankets, towels and anything else you feel I might be able to use with either my over-wintering hedgehogs or the ferret rescue.

It may seem like a small thing to you - although I am aware some of you travel a fair distance to make your donations - but every item gets used for the rescues and you make it all happen.

You are hugely appreciated xx

It's been a year filled with prickles and fur - happy hogs, poorly hogs, little hogs, fat hogs and everything in between. Thankfully many have come in and become well enough to be released back into the wild.

And it wouldn't have been possible without YOU - those who drop off newspapers, hedgehog food, snuggly hedgehog beds, fluffy blankets - so thank you to you all

Here's to 2025 and all it brings! Hopefully these guys will be released in the Spring.

Little update - very big deep clean of our tiny rescue today.

Just 3 residents at present - all healthy - all underweight to be out there in the big wide world. They will be with me until they are over 700g and there is no danger of frost. Let's see how it goes.

Thank you to the lovely people who come week after week to drop off newspapers, cat food, hedgehog snuggle bags. I would find it hard to continue without your support.

All help is greatly appreciated. I may only have 3 hedgehogs just now but visitors will know I have 26 furry rescues too and can only thank everyone for all their help.

Some pics from today. Note Hog Cam - love being able to watch from afar!

Dear Hedgehog Fans

For some reason I am not getting messages until long after they have been sent, and cannot currently reply to them either. So I am sorry if you are not getting responses and hope it will all sort out eventually if I just leave it alone and wait.

We currently have several little hedgehogs overwintering here and all are eating rather well and producing the consequent "outputs" so newspapers and hedgehog food ( Brambles Meaty Hedgehog Food or Whiskas cat Food or Pedigree Adult Wet Dog Food Mixed Loaf) is very welcome to see us through the winter - well those are their favourites but they eat what is put in front of them in the main.

Next time I refresh their nests I will try and get some photos to share. I don't like to disturb them too much.

Thank you for the support to date - it has kept us going through a very busy year.

Hedgehogs come out in the dark - I think we all know that - so if you see hedgehogs in your garden at night - busy mooching about under bushes etc - they are doing hedgehog things and do not need to be rescued.

If you want to be helpful you can put a couple of shallow dishes of water and wet cat/dog food down - it's always good to grab a take away instead of going to the trouble of going to the supermarket - but unless they are out in the daytime, they are probably doing just fine and have a lovely cosy house nearby.

Sometimes caring means doing nothing at all xx

3 big fat hoggies have wombled off into the wild tonight - plenty of hog houses and leaves and food to keep them going while they settle in but at 600-700g each, they needed to go free. They would have left sooner but for Bonfire Night malarkey - so they stayed safe with me.

Be safe and be free Happy, Sleepy and Cassie.

Last week, three huge healthy hogs went off to their new home. All three had come in weighing 100-150g and all have left here around 550-600g - and boy were they ready to go.

They have gone to live freely in a quieter area where they hopefully not be too troubled by fireworks. Three more are ready to go and while the weather is perfect, they will be staying safe and quiet until the insanity of Bonfire Night has passed.

We have welcomed a small juvenile tonight. He is very underweight and had fallen down a flight of steps. He seems unharmed but will be having a good check up and some TLC while he recovers - I say "he" but so far "he" is not sharing that information so I will update when I have a factual report :-)

Please please - if you are attending a bonfire event this week - ask the organisers to physically check for wildlife before they light it - they probably won't and we will have a string of horror stories - but at least we will have tried. It's an awful time of year for our prickly friends.

Thank you for caring

Despite some releases this week, juveniles are still coming in and the newspaper stock is dropping. If you are in an office etc where people have newspapers, please consider saving them for us as we get through so many and can never have enough.

Thank you

Where did we come from..........

Pawprints Wildlife Rescue offers rescue, rehabilitation and where appropriate, release for a variety of wildlife – currently hedgehogs, although we are seeing increasing numbers of birds and small mammals too.
