The Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team (HVMRT) is a volunteer-based search and rescue organisation based in Marsden, near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. The team has over 40 members who are on call to assist those in difficulty, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, whatever the weather - plus a similar number who are non-qualified trainees, helpers and support members. The team covers an area of over 1

,000 square kilometres of diverse terrain, ranging from rugged open moorland and crags to rural and semi-urban areas, and varying in altitude between 7m and nearly 600m above sea level. This area of operations roughly comprises the southern half of West Yorkshire, and the team operates under the auspices of West Yorkshire Police. Mountain Rescue in the UK is an entirely volunteer-based organisation that operates at no cost to the individuals or organisations who are assisted. Holme Valley MRT is one of 58 teams that belong to Mountain Rescue England and Wales - who estimate the annual cost of running this service to be around £2.5 million. Throughout the organisation’s history, it has received no regular funding from government or any other official sources - individual teams operate independently and meet their own running costs on a charitable basis by donations from the public. Although the team’s primary role is search and rescue from the Pennine moors and crags, the specialist equipment and skill-set necessary for Mountain Rescue is frequently deployed elsewhere on incidents “closer to home”. The team is routinely called in by West Yorkshire Police to assist with missing person searches - particularly in cases involving the elderly or vulnerable, or children. The team is also regularly called in by Yorkshire Ambulance Service to assist with casualties in remote or difficult to access areas - such incidents may be less than 100m from a paved road, but terrain or conditions require specialist equipment and techniques - or just strength of numbers - to extricate a casualty. Similarly, when severe weather conditions impede the progress of the regular emergency services, Mountain Rescue teams make up a valuable part of the contingency planning. Snow, heavy rain, exceptionally poor visibility and severe flooding are all scenarios where the specific skills and equipment of Mountain Rescue teams can be brought to bear. Throughout the UK, Mountain Rescue teams are included as a valuable part of civil contingency planning, on call in the case of a major incident. Holme Valley MRT regularly trains with West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service as a part of emergency planning for a possible rail or canal incident in Standege Tunnel, the longest, highest and deepest canal tunnel in the UK - which terminates a few hundred metres from the team’s base in the Pennine village of Marsden. The team’s base, Emergency House, is a former fire station building, purchased in 2015, which provides garaging for two emergency vehicles, as well as a control room, training facilities, a small kitchen and storage and drying facilities for specialist rescue equipment.

🚨 INCIDENT UPDATE: Double Callout – 23rd August 🚨

It was a busy day for our volunteers on Sunday, with 14 team members responding to two back-to-back incidents across the region.

🚲 Incident 1: Medical Evacuation (Newmillerdam)
At 10:46, we were requested by Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) to assist with an injured cyclist who had fallen on a disused railway line.

Luckily, a passer-by had stopped to help—and even more luckily, they were a doctor! Given the serious nature of the casualty's injuries, immediate medical care was administered on-scene. Our team then carried out a stretcher evacuation, transferring the casualty to the road head and into an awaiting ambulance. We wish them a full and speedy recovery!

🔍 Incident 2: Missing Person Search (Allerton Bywater )
Before the first incident was fully wrapped up, West Yorkshire Police requested our assistance to search for a missing person in the Allerton Bywater area.

Because 14 of our members were already nearby, they immediately redeployed to the location to search a nearby wooded area. As the search zone was compact, team members on scene were able to cover the tasking.

Several segments and sectors were thoroughly searched, and the team stood down at 16:49 while police continue their enquiries.

As always, a huge thank you to our dedicated volunteers who give up their time, and to the public for their continued support.

Today International Mountain Rescue Day.
"On this weekend in 1948, mountain rescue pioneers from different countries gathered at the Wilden Kaiser at the invitation of the Austrian Alpine Club. They exchanged knowledge, shared experiences, and laid the foundation for what would become ICAR – the International Commission for Alpine Rescue – officially founded in 1955."

Our thoughts are with those affected by the devastating floods in Nepal. The Himalayan Rescue Association Nepal (HRA) and Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA) have mobilized to support emergency rescue operations in Rasuwa.

The rescue team is currently at the airport and, while adverse weather prevented departure today, they remain committed to supporting relief efforts and will attempt to deploy tomorrow, conditions permitting.

The Pennine Way National Trail has now re-opened between Crowden and the Black Hill trig point.

During the upland moorland fire the compacted ground of the Pennine Way acted as a firebreak calling a halt to the flames progress.

WE'VE BEEN TRAVELLING - SKYE
In August we tell you what our volunteers and fellow volunteers have been doing during the holidays. This is a story from

While we were basking in 30C temperatures, the Skye volunteers assisted 20 people across a number of separate incidents in torrential rain.

It was an exceptionally demanding day for the volunteers, and one of the busiest days the Skye MRT team can remember. With several incidents unfolding at once, everyone available was committed to responding - and the team was called out again the following day.

Skye MRT has shared some important reflections following the incidents, particularly around how the Skye Trail is understood, described and undertaken.

Look them up and follow them on Facebook.

🚁 Happy World Helicopter Day 2025! 🚁 Today, we honour the heroes who take to the skies, bridging the gap between remote moorlands and definitive care. We're always glad to see these noisy monsters appear when we're dealing with a critical situation.

UPDATE ON THE PENNINE WAY, south from Black Hill
Details from Pennine Way National Trail
The Pennine Way remains closed between Crowden and the Black Hill trig point whilst emergency services manage the areas affected by the recent wildfires. The closure is expected to remain in place until 26th August 2026.

A diversion is in place as shown on the map and in the following instructions:

To continue northwards, after crossing the A628 at Torside Reservoir, continue along the track all the way in to Crowden, leaving the Pennine Way at the point where it turns left heading northwards towards Laddow Rocks. Take the footpath heading north east out of Crowden towards Hey Moss, passing over Westend Moss and Tooleyshaw Moss to rejoin the Pennine Way at the Black Hill trig point. If heading southwards along the trail, leave the trail at the Black Hill trig point following the same footpath towards Crowden.
