YWT Stirley Stirley Farm is a 100 hectare site in Newsome, south east of Huddersfield. Most of the farm was either cut for hay or grazed by dairy cattle in the past.

Stirley is an inspirational place which is bringing back wildlife to our landscape, and working with local people to achieve healthy living and a healthy environment in Newsome, south east of Huddersfield. The Trust plans to manage the meadows as a low input system which benefits wildlife and supports a healthy herd of beef cattle. In the future our beef will be for sale locally in a box scheme and through local shops, enabling the farm to become a viable enterprise. Many people and community groups on our doorstep are growing their own food, and at Stirley, we are creating a variety of fruit and veg growing areas where people can share their skills and knowledge to enable them to learn more about 'growing your own' both on the farm and closer to home. In the future, we hope to secure funding to renovate the farmhouse and buildings to create a learning centre and meeting place for visitors and schools, and events celebrating local food.

"Before joining Green Skills, I found it difficult to speak to people I didn’t know. Working alongside other young people really boosted my confidence speaking to and sharing ideas with others. This has also extended far beyond green skills as I now feel much more willing to try new things and I am now equipped with people skills that help me in all areas of life."

This summer, young people from across Kirklees joined us at Stirley for Green Skills in the Hills, getting hands-on with everything from woodland management and conservation grazing to willow weaving, rivers, food growing and digital storytelling. The programme was designed to help 16 to 25 year olds build confidence, develop practical skills, connect with nature and explore future opportunities.

As these reflections show, the impact has gone far beyond learning green skills. Participants have grown in confidence, made new connections, tried new experiences and gained valuable skills to take into all areas of life.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part, our fantastic partners and the staff who helped make the programme such a success. We're so proud of what you've achieved and can't wait to see where your journeys take you next. ✨

We have a big thank you to give to everyone for making Stirley Food Festival such a success. We had over 500 attendees who visited us and it was a joy to see everyone getting involved, touring the garden, digging up veg, making wild art, taking part in the drumming circle and much much more.

In order to help us make future years even more of a success we would really appreciate any feedback you would be willing to give us on the day. Things that went really well for you and also things we could do differently in the future. Please do let us know what you thought on the below link.

Got anything at home that needs a new lease on life? We are excited to announce that Huddersfield Repair Cafe will be operating a pop up repair booth at Stirley Food Festival on Saturday.

So if you have something that isn't working quite right and needs some attention, bring it along with you for them to take a look.

They are happy to look at most things except microwaves and TVs over 36 inches.

Last week, the Stirley team headed out on a field trip to join River Holme Connections at a nearby grassland site which was bursting with yellow rattle, an important wildflower.

Using a special brush harvester, we collected yellow rattle seed from the meadow. The next step is to spread the freshly harvested seed out on tarpaulins to dry before it can be safely stored and eventually sown.

We are happy to share that some of this seed will be used on the meadows at Stirley, helping to boost our meadow restoration work. River Holme Connections will also be using seed from the harvest in their own restoration projects.

Did you know?
Yellow rattle gets its name from both its bright yellow flowers and the distinctive rattling sound made by its ripe seeds when the plant is disturbed.
