Separation-distance problems rarely start at installation. They usually begin much earlier.

Busy risers, late service changes, services positioned too close to aperture edges, and mixed-service openings can make compliant fire stopping much more difficult once work reaches the site.

Good planning can make a significant difference:

· Consider service routes and spacing during design
· Check edge distances before forming openings
· Verify service types, sizes and insulation against the tested
detail
· Confirm annular gaps and seal depths
· Photograph and record the completed installation

Early coordination gives installers the space they need to install the tested system correctly. Treat fire stopping as a coordinated technical system, not a last-stage trade fix.

Can fire-stopping services be installed with a 0mm separation?

Sometimes, but only where supported by the relevant tested system and classification evidence.

Some Protecta systems permit non-combustible services to touch, and certain tested arrangements allow 0mm separation between particular service combinations.

But this should never be assumed. Combustible services often require separation to allow intumescent products to activate correctly and to prevent one service affecting another.

The rule is simple:
If the exact service combination and spacing are not documented in the relevant test evidence or installation instructions, treat it as not approved.

When in doubt, stop and check the evidence.

Separation distances are not just measurements on a drawing. They are part of the tested fire-stopping system.

The minimum spacing between pipes, cables, conduits and adjacent openings can directly affect how a pe*******on seal performs in a fire.

Incorrect separation distances can increase the risk of:
· Reduced fire resistance
· Premature failure
· Increased smoke leakage
· Overheating of services and fire stopping materials

Protecta systems are tested as complete configurations, and the permitted separation distances form part of that evidence.

That’s why spacing should be considered during design and coordination, not left until installation. We’ll be looking at some of the key separation-distance considerations installers, contractors and designers need to understand.

The 3T’s: Our commitment to our customers.

We believe our responsibility goes beyond supplying passive fire protection products. It’s about giving our customers the evidence, knowledge and support they need to make the right decisions — from specification through to installation.

That commitment is built around our 3T’s:

TESTING
We continually invest in extensive fire testing to develop tested systems for the challenges our customers face on real projects.

TRAINING
We turn technical evidence into practical knowledge, helping installers and project teams understand not just what to install, but how to install it correctly.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT
When projects don’t fit neatly into a standard detail, our Technical Team is there to help customers understand the evidence and identify appropriate tested solutions.

Together, the 3T’s represent something bigger: our commitment to supporting our customers and helping the industry get passive fire protection right the first time.

The success of a fire-stopping installation is often determined long before anyone reaches for a sealant gun.

Before work begins, it's worth asking a few key questions:

• Does the supporting construction match the tested system?
• Has this service type and configuration been tested?
• Are the aperture dimensions and annular gaps within the tested limits?
• Does the detail require a specific insulation arrangement?
• Does the proposed system meet the required fire classification and project specification?

Getting these details right from the outset helps reduce the risk of:

✔ Delays
✔ Rework
✔ Failed inspections
✔ Unnecessary costs

Technical planning isn't about slowing a project down. It's about ensuring the right tested system is selected, installed correctly and approved with confidence. Because when you get it right before installation begins, everything that follows becomes easier.

If you need technical guidance and support, our technical team is ready to help:

An installed pe*******on seal can appear compliant...

…but appearance alone tells you nothing about whether it will perform in a fire.

Fire stopping systems achieve their fire rating through tested system performance, not individual products. Changing any part of the tested configuration can affect how the system performs in a fire, including:

- The wall or floor construction
- Service size and type
- Annular gap
- Insulation
- Support spacing
- Seal depth

Two installations may look identical but deliver very different levels of fire resistance. That's why installation should always be based on tested evidence, not assumptions.

At Protecta, we believe confidence comes from understanding why a solution works, not simply how it looks. Getting it right the first time starts with choosing the right tested system.

The best time to resolve a fire stopping question is before it becomes a site problem.

Every project presents different conditions. Wall and floor constructions, service sizes, insulation, spacing and access can all affect whether a tested system is suitable.

Protecta’s Technical Team work with customers to review applications, clarify tested requirements and identify appropriate solutions before installation begins.

Our support can help with:
✔ Selecting suitable tested systems
✔ Reviewing service and construction details
✔ Clarifying classifications and limitations
✔ Resolving complex applications earlier
✔ Reducing delays and unnecessary remedial work

Technical Support is the third of Protecta’s 3 Ts, connecting testing and training with the realities of live projects.

The right fire stopping system only works when it is understood and installed correctly.

Fire stopping involves more than selecting a product. Installers, contractors and project teams must understand the tested detail, supporting construction, required seal depth, separation distances and installation requirements.

Protecta training helps turn technical evidence into practical knowledge.

Through online and in-person sessions, we support customers with:
✔ Product and system understanding
✔ Reading installation details correctly
✔ Recognising common installation errors
✔ Improving confidence and consistency on site
✔ Supporting better compliance and traceability

Training is the second of Protecta’s 3 Ts, helping project teams get fire stopping right the first time.

Tested systems are the foundation of effective fire stopping.

Fire performance cannot be assumed from a product alone. It depends on the complete tested system, including the supporting construction, service type, aperture, annular gap, seal depth and installation method.

That is why Protecta continues to invest in extensive testing and certification across a wide range of applications.

Early access to this evidence helps project teams:
✔ Identify suitable systems sooner
✔ Reduce unsupported installations
✔ Improve specification and coordination
✔ Make decisions based on tested performance

Testing is the first of Protecta’s 3 Ts, helping customers understand not only what a product can do, but exactly where and how it can be used.
