Steve joined Sawtry in 2013 and says one the best part of the role is: The adrenaline kick when the alerter goes off.

⚽ Hobbies & Interests: Jetskiing

• Biggest motivation for joining the Fire Service?

Supporting the community and being available when someone is in need.

• Most memorable moment in the role?

Attending an RTC to a van crushed between two articulated lorries thinking was potentially a fatal incident to find the driver alive and only sustained minor injuries.

• Best piece of advice you've ever received?

If you really want something to go out and get it.

• What do you enjoy doing when you're off duty?

I enjoy jetskiing, riding my motorbike. Spending time with friends and family.

Alex joined Sawtry in 2019 and says one the best part of the role is: being part of a group of people who genuinely care about the people they serve and the people they work with.

⚽ Hobbies & Interests: I like golf, listening to music, trying to keep fit and dogs

☕ Tea or Coffee: Coffee as tea just tastes like dirty water

• Biggest motivation for joining the Fire Service?

Fireman Sam, when I was a kid, I was hooked as soon as I saw him riding round Pontypandy.

• Most memorable moment in the role?

My first day in the job realising I had achieved something id wanted to do since being little.

• Best piece of advice you've ever received?

Manners cost nothing and it costs nothing to be kind – my Mum.


• What do you enjoy doing when you're off duty?

I enjoy simple things. Spending time with the people I care about, having a good laugh and trying to make the most of my time away from work.

Challenging myself physically and mentally.

Passing my ERD (Emergency Response Driving), and my first blues run the day after.

When im off call im either going for a coffee with friends, in a garden centre, spending time with my wife & daughters or training for a full Ironman 🏊‍♂️🚴‍♀️🏃‍♂️

• Biggest motivation for joining the Fire Service?

It may sound a little contrived, but the biggest motivation was to make a difference in my community… And to ride in a big red truck!

Firefighting from the top of a tree at a commercial building fire.

• Best piece of advice you've ever received?

When you are in a high-pressure situation, perform calm, deliberate actions.


• What do you enjoy doing when you're off duty?

Distance running, hiking/camping, photography and spending time with the family.

Ray joined Sawtry in 2024 after retiring from an impressive 30 years career with Hertfordshire fire and rescue and says one the best part of the role is: Every incident, job is different having to learn new skills. Passing on your knowledge to others.

Being able to help someone who is having probably the worst moment of their life.

• Most memorable moment in the role?

Getting the call to a fire in Hemel Hempstead. Turned out to be the biggest fire since world war 2. Took 5 weeks to extinguish and was attended by almost 20 fire services.

• Best piece of advice you've ever received?

Adapt, improvise, overcome

• What do you enjoy doing when you're off duty?

Taking my 4 dogs on walks (or more them taking me!!!!). Snooker. DIY

🚒🔥 You may have noticed and heard a few more sirens around the village recently...

Our crew and neighbouring crews have been kept busy by responding to a variety of incidents from road traffic collisions to false alarms, and including a car fire we attended last night (pictured below).

As your local On-Call fire station, we're proud to be there when our community needs us. However, we're looking for more dedicated people to join our team so we can continue providing the best possible cover for our village and surrounding area.

Being on-call is a rewarding role that fits around many jobs and lifestyles. You'll gain valuable skills and make a real difference to our community!

Weather you're looking for a new challenge or simply want to give something back to the community, we'd love to hear from you.

This week we're introducing FF Ellis

👨‍🚒 Role: Firefighter
📅 Years of Service: 2.5 years

Robin joined Sawtry in 2023 and says one the best part of the role is: Learning skills that literally help you save lives — and learning how to stay calm when everything around you absolutely isn’t.

👨‍🚒👩‍🚒Favourite Part of the Job:
The crew. I’ll know these people for the rest of my life (sorry guys 😋).

🚒 Favourite Equipment: The fire engine. Not just because of what it can do, but because of what it means — hope when things look bad, and inspiration for anyone watching it roll in.

⚽ Hobbies & Interests: Gym 5 days a week, family time, camping, taking the dogs out (two springadors causing chaos), audiobooks, heavy music, and yes… I genuinely enjoy anime.

☕ Tea or Coffee: Cup o’ Yorkshire tea, duck — obviously.

• Biggest motivation for joining the Fire Service?

Helping people during the worst moments of their lives — and hopefully making those moments a bit less terrifying.

• Most memorable moment in the role?

Receiving the Silver Axe Award for outstanding performance. Still waiting for someone to tell me it was a clerical error.

• Best piece of advice you've ever received?

“Show me your friends and I will tell you who you are.”


• What do you enjoy doing when you're off duty?

Planning our next adventure… or booking myself back on duty because apparently I don’t understand the concept of rest 😁
