Planning for, and dealing with major incidents, involves multiple organisations coming together to keep everyone safe and deal with the emergency situation. As a fire service we are a key partner in the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Local Resilience Forum which is that coordination body. It operates at tactical and strategic levels and is the place where decisions are made, tactics agreed and support is given. While the Holme Fen fire was in major incident status, tactical command meetings took place daily. The fire service, police, ambulance, local council, water companies, Environment Agency, Met Office, Natural England, Highways, Network Rail, health organisations and others briefed each other, discussed issues, agreed solutions and worked together behind the scenes to coordinate the response. With a large fire, many see the firefighters on the frontline, but the coordination behind the scenes by different partner agencies is a vital part of the operation – from road closures to weather reports, and water supplies to assessing the impact on the adjacent rail-line, everyone comes together to look at the different impacts, mitigate the risks and take action.
