To all the Dads here at …

Today we say thanks for the sacrifices you make to help others. The missed birthdays, sports days and other school events. The family days out and meal time chatter. The sports matches, goals scored and dance competitions won.

You cheer from afar, on shift, on duty, being there for others in their hour of need. So to you we say thank you for all you do, for the family sacrifices you make to help others and serve your community and we wish you a happy Father’s Day.

If you end up in the water and you get into difficulty remember to .

Lean back, use your arms and legs to stay afloat and control your breathing. Once calm either call for help or try and swim to safety.

If you see someone else in trouble near water, call for help immediately. Never try and carry out a rescue yourself, you could put yourself in danger too.

Following the train crash in Bedfordshire this evening, we are asking people to help us keep our Emergency Department available for those who need it most.

Please only attend if you need emergency care.

All other services are operating as normal.

If you need medical advice but it is not an emergency, please use NHS 111 or other appropriate NHS services.

Thank you for your support and understanding. Our thanks also go to our staff, as well as emergency service colleagues for everything they are doing to support patients and their families.

🚒 What our on-call firefighters have been up to lately… 🚒

🔥 Training hard 🔥
Our crews have been keeping their skills sharp across the county:
- Firefighters from St Ives Community Fire & Rescue Station have been honing their essential breathing apparatus skills — vital training that keeps them ready for anything.
- At Sutton Community Fire & Rescue Station, crews got hands-on with ladder pitching and pumping water. 🪜💧
- Meanwhile, Sawtry Community Fire & Rescue Station put their skills to the test with combi drills — using dams and portable pumps in realistic, high-pressure scenarios. 🚒

With summer just around the corner, our stations are continuing to raise money for Fire Fighters Charity ❤️
Sawtry Fire Station hosted theirs a couple of weeks ago, and there’s more to come:

This week we've attended two house fires involving candles.

Candles in a home may feel cosy, but they can quickly become a serious fire risk if not used safely. Please take a moment to follow these simple steps to protect your home:

- Never leave candles unattended.
- Make sure you have a good bedtime routine, checking candles are fully out before you sleep.
- Place candles in a draught-free area away from curtains, furniture and other flammable surfaces
- Leave plenty of space above and around the candle and its holder
- Keep candles out of reach of children and pets

With hot weather forecast, an amber heat health alert is in place across the East of England until 8pm on Tuesday 23 June.

While we hope people enjoy the warm weather, please remember to do so safely.

There are things you can do to stay well in hot weather, including:

💧 Drink fluids regularly throughout the day to prevent dehydration – if you are going out, take a refillable bottle filled with water.
☀️ Protect yourself from the sun – stay in the shade, wear lightweight clothes and a hat, and apply sunscreen generously and frequently.
🏃🏻 Limit strenuous physical activity during the hottest part of the day, between 11am and 3pm
🏠 Keep your home cool – close curtains in rooms that face the sun, open windows when the air feels cooler outside than inside and turn off lights and electrical items that are not in use.

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare, a phone call to say their child is missing in water.

The last month or so has brought this into sharp focus, with many tragic incidents around the country involving young people entering open water and not resurfacing. In April 2025, 16-year-old Jack Lloyd sadly did just that.

Today, as part of we launch a new short film – Cold Water Shock – When Fun Turns Fatal, telling Jack’s tragic story with a heartbreaking account from his father Darren explaining the impact of the incident on him and his family. Fire and police officers also talk about the impact of these incidents, as well as giving advice about what to do to stay safe around open water.

The film was launched at a special screening event at the ODEON Luxe Peterborough

We have several Biker Down courses taking place at fire stations across the county during the summer months.

The course offers motorcyclists the opportunity to learn practical skills to help avoid being involved in a crash, as well as essential first-aid training and advice on what to do should they find themselves first on the scene of a crash where someone is injured.
