Don't forget that Willington Dovecote and Stables is open tomorrow (31 May) between 2pm and 5pm.

The 16th century dovecote is one of the best preserved examples in England. Come inside and see the 1,500 nesting boxes which once hosted Sir John Gostick's pigeons - a symbol of his great wealth.

The neighbouring church will also be open for the afternoon, offering an organ recital and refreshments.

Entry is free but donations to the National Trust and the local church are appreciated. The dovecote is located around 4 miles east of Bedford, just north of the A603 in Willington.

In the light of recent tragedies related to outdoor swimming, we'd like to remind you that we do not recommend swimming in the river at Houghton Mill.

We know that the Mill has been a popular spot for water activities for a long time, however, there are many dangers in the waters and we strongly advise you not to swim. The water depth varies a great deal – some areas are suddenly very deep. There are underwater hazards that could injure or entangle you. The sluice gates could open at any time, and the waterwheel creates dangerous currents. The area is unsupervised and there are no lifeguards present.

We want everyone to be able to enjoy the water safely. If you have children who might be unsupervised by the river, please remind them not to swim close to the Mill and to stay clear of the sluice gates at all times.

Visit our friends at Willington Dovecote and Stables this Sunday 31 May between 2pm and 5pm for their May Open Day.

The Tudor stables witnessed Henry VIII's visit to Willington in 1541 and the 16th century dovecote is one of the best preserved examples in England.
