Supporting the whole student means supporting military families, too. Military and Family Life Counselors (MFLCs) provide valuable resources and support to help students navigate life's challenges and stay focused on success. Learn more in the post below.

Military-connected students face unique challenges, from frequent moves to deployments and life transitions. Military and Family Life Counselors (MFLCs) play an important role in supporting students and families through those experiences.

At DoWEA, we value the partnerships that help our students stay , connected, and ready to learn. As we head into summer, remember that support is available for military families whenever it’s needed.

Please join us in recognizing the retirement of Susan Payne Berneau, Information Specialist, following 34 years in education, including 26 years with DoWEA.

Susan began her career in Indiana teaching middle school social studies. She later earned her master’s degree in information science, transitioning into the role of Information Specialist.

Her DoWEA service began in the United Kingdom, where she served as Information Specialist at London Central High School (2000–2007) and Croughton Elementary School (2007–2008). She then joined Alconbury Middle High School (2008–2026), where she spent the past 18 years serving as both a middle and high school social studies teacher and Information Specialist.

Over the course of her career, Susan taught a range of courses including U.S. History, Geography, AP U.S. History, AP Government, and Comparative Government. She also served as the sponsor for Model United Nations and as Senior Class Sponsor, supporting student leadership and school engagement. In addition to her instructional role, Susan contributed to extracurricular programs by coaching volleyball and organizing student field studies throughout the United Kingdom. She founded the Amy Houghton Memorial Scholarship and, along with colleagues, helped raise more than $25,000 to support graduating seniors. In recognition of her excellence in teaching, Susan was named DoDEA Social Studies Teacher of the Year in 2013.

Susan and her husband, Eric, plan to spend retirement traveling, splitting their time between London and France. Please join us in thanking Susan for her years of service and in wishing her well in retirement.
